50 Ways to Hex Your Lover by L. Wisdom

I have been hearing so many things about Linda Wisdom’s Hex series that when I was given the chance to read her upcoming novel, Wicked by Any Other Name, I immediately started the first novel in the series, 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover.

The sizzling love affair between Jazz and Nick has been off-again, on-again for about 300 years. Mostly off, lately. But now Nick needs Jazz’s help, and while Jazz and Nick try to figure out their own hearts and resist their ever-increasing attraction, they must steer clear of a maniacal killer with super-supernatural powers. They are surrounded by a hilarious cast of oddball paranormal characters, including Irma, the chain-smoking ghost who haunts Jazz’s sports car, Dweezil, her ghoul of a boss, and Fluff and Puff, a pair of bunny slippers with sharp teeth and short tempers (watch your ankles)!

After reading 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover, I’m really looking forward to the next novel, Hex Appeal.  The characters are hilarious and so…so…Nick is so male and Jazz is so female (I couldn’t think of a way to say that in one word).  The chemistry between the two main characters, Nick and Jazz, is comical and yet you can tell they truly care about each other…enough to wring each others neck when it’s called for.  They’ve been lovers before, but Jazz is extremely hesitate to start anything again because of how their “together time” always ends.  She doesn’t want to go through that again.  I also love it when a novel gives us both point of views in a relationship.  I’m not talking about during the entire novel, but we’re not left guessing how Nick feels about Jazz.  There are various scenes where Nick is in the lead and it adds to their relationship instead of the story (well, it does some of that as well, but it’s more Jazz than anything).

As for the plot, it wasn’t fast paced or kick ass action, but it was good.  It unfolded well and it didn’t have a feeling of being rushed.  Sometimes, with the faster paced action scenes, the whole plot can come out in a hurry and your rushed through it.  I never felt that way once with 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover.  I was kept interested in learning more about Jazz and Nick as well as finding out what happens with their case.  I also happened to love the scenes with Dweezil!  He was hilarious and I’m really hoping there’ll be more of him in Hex Appeal.

Overall, I truly enjoyed 50 Ways to Hex Your Lover and I can’t wait to start Hex Appeal.  With the way Wisdom left Jazz and Nick, I have a feeling we’re going to see more of their relationship blooming.  However, considering their history, I’m not expecting it to be all roses and peaches.  Time to go pick up Hex Appeal, I’ll be back with that review soon.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
