Genre Categorizing Sucks!

23 Nov 2008 | Submitted by: Jackie | 6 Comments |

And I’m not talking in the naughty vampire way either.

So I’m helping Dewey, over at The Hidden Side of a Leaf, come up with a Book Bloggers Top 10 Books of 2008 and we’ve have about 333 nominations in 16 different categories.  The problem I’m running into is that I’m not entirely familiar with all of the novels.  So I’m asking for some help.  Can you take a look at the nominations and see if any have been categorized wrong?  I’ll be taking corrections up until Wednesday afternoon since I need to have the polls for voting up before I leave for Thanksgiving.

If you’re like me and have no clue, damn, but if you know of anyone who might know, could you please pass on my plea of help? Thanks.

If you want to help us determine the top 10, make sure you head over to The Hidden Side of a Leaf for Weekly Geeks on Saturday.  Dewey will have the post with all the links up then.

ETA: The page was the list of nominations has been taken down since it was so large. Sorry.

    Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella (in the empty category) is women’s fiction

    Black Ships in Uncategorized is Historical Fantasy

    I would move these to Young Adult Fantasy category -
    * Un Lun Dun
    * Sweet Far Thing Trilogy
    * City of Ashes

    I would move Any Given Doomsday and Wicked Game from Romance to Urban Fantasy

    Thats my two cents worth.

    You don’t think Wicked Game is a para-romance?

    I had Un Lun Dun as YA, but I am so going to take your word for those since I haven’t read them.

    Oh, I agree! I don’t envy you the frustration here. I might put Garden Spells by Sarah Allen Addison in Women’s Fiction but… I don’t really know. Maybe even a little fantasy? I just looked it up on Amazon and I really see how this would get tricky! They had most votes for ‘magical realism’.

    The author cited for The Crime Writer is Gregg Hurwitz (Scott Brick was the reader for the audio.) and this is in the right category of Mystery Thrillers.

    Awesome job, Jackie, really!

    Hey Jackie
    I read Wicked Games but didn’t come away with a strong romance vibe. The others I read and am sure of.

    Dracula Dossier by James Reese – has no paranormal elements despite its title. Should be in Mystery

    Vampyres of Hollywood by Adrienne Barbeau and Scott Michael – is about vampires and might better be placed in urban fantasy.

    Merciless (Dominion Trilogy #3) by Robin Parrish has paranormal elements

    Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill – also has paranormal elements

    Wicked Games – should be urban fantasy
