Magic Burns by I. Andrews

I am definitely falling in love with the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. In the second installment, Magic Burns, Atlanta is going through the beginnings of a magic flare. During this time, it is easier for the gods to cross over and do whatever their will is. This time Morfran is trying to enter the world and he’s bringing the Fomorians with him. Let’s just say this is bad and for some reason, they need this little girl that Kate ends up protecting. Andrews never really gives us a reason for this need, but that seems to be a steady theme for them. The farther I got into this book, the more I realized that I really didn’t know that much about the main character, Kate. We know she has power words and some form of magic, but we have yet to find out what kind of magic that is. Whatever it is, it takes Morfran by surprised…and that’s all I’m saying on the plot.

We’re also given more insight into the strange relationship between Kate and Curran. I say strange, because neither of them have ever said they have an interest in each other, yet they both enjoy irritating each other so much that maybe they don’t see the attraction. I’m sure there is a reason behind this; maybe build up so when the relationship does happen and it flops, that Andrews won’t have to bring in another character for a romantic lead. I don’t know. Either way, I find this relationship to be fun. It’s not often that you come across a book where two characters keep being told that there is an attraction yet they don’t show any signs of it. It makes it interesting to see how they react. There is obviously a love-hate relationship going on, but that’ll only make the final culmination of any kind of intimate relationship to be more heated.

Overall, Magic Burns is definitely a keeper. The world Kate lives in and the characters she has to interact with keep bringing the unexpected and we’re given new twists at every turn. The story moved along at a great pace and I was never bored for a moment. At the moment, I’ve been getting bored easily with plots and this one was never dull for a moment. I can’t wait until the third novel, Magic Strikes, comes out although there is no release date for it yet.

  1. I am really looking forward to getting around to this series (book two comes out in the UK in April). I bought the first one for the silly reason that there was a Patricia Briggs quote on the front of the first book saying it was great! I am glad to hear she was right ;)

  2. I just discovered this series and it’s my new favorite, next to Mercy Thompson. The second book was even better than the first. I can’t believe we have to wait until 2009 for the next one!
