SciFi and Fantasy Reviewers Wanted

I’ve been wanting to expand the focus of LE for awhile now and I think its time.  Jennifer, Tricia and I have the UF/PNR genres covered, but a natural companion to these genres is science fiction and straight fantasy (you know, the high/epic/dungeons and dragons kind).  I’m not the only one who believes this either since I’ve been getting a lot of requests for these genres and they are not ones that instantly get moved to the top of my reading stack.  So it’s time to add a couple more reviewers.

Literary Escapism is looking to add one reviewer for science fiction and one reviewer for straight fantasy.  These reviewers will get consulted on all review requests for their respective genre alone, but will also be held to the same standards of the current LE Staff:

  1. Have an interest in Fantasy (High, Epic, Dragons, etc) or Science Fiction (including SF Romance) and will be wiling to review most anything that gets requested.  I’m not saying you’ll like everything, but I get a lot of new authors in these genres requesting reviews and they are the ones I really hate turning down.
  2. Be willing to read and review at least five books a month (depending on their length since I know some tend to be quite big) and be willing to read books on a deadline.  While I understand reading is merely a hobby for many, LE is the only job I have and I tend to treat it as such since I do receive books for review.
  3. Be willing to give me your address, so that books may magically appear on your doorstep.  This is one bonus to being a reviewer.  One caveat, you must be a US resident.  Sorry guys, LE doesn’t make quite that much and I’m trying to make the site as self-sufficient as I can.
  4. Understand that being an LE reviewer means…
    • free books are not a guarantee and are only available when I have them or requests are sent.  However, reviews can be written for anything you read and your commitment to reviewing five books a month should not be contingent upon receiving free novels.
    • there is no compensation for this position other than being able to keep whatever books that you review.
    • successfully complete a 30-day probationary period which will involve reading and reviewing your own books or ebooks prior to receiving any from LE.
    • have an ereader or doesn’t mind reading on your computer.
    • reviews should be written in a professional manner.
    • being open to constructive feedback from both readers and myself.
    • any review posted on LE cannot be submitted to another review site; however, a snippet may be added to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, GoodReads, LibraryThing, etc (and is encouraged) with an ending tag line indicating the full review can be seen at LE.
  5. Upon agreeing to being a reviewer, I expect you to read and review all novels acquired through Literary Escapism regardless if you like them or not – even if that means a review indicating you did not finish the book as long as you state why.  Any review is better than no review from a readers perspective as long as you’re honest (and tactful).
  6. As I receive books, I will send out a synopsis to all reviewers and the first to respond will receive (depending on your current stack).  Ultimately, I would like to get to the point where I’m not turning any requests away.  I’m looking for anyone who is willing to try something new even if it’s not immediately appealing.
  7. All potential reviewers should have no ties to the publishing industry, review for another paranormal or non-paranormal fiction review site, or have your own review site.

Hopefully, none of this sounds unreasonable, but I’ll be honest, Literary Escapism is my baby and the only job I currently have, so I am really hands on when it comes to reviews. Nothing gets published without me going through it once and I’ve been known to ask for more before posting it (even my husband has been subjected to this).  One thing I would like to stress is all reviews have to be based on one’s honest opinion.  That is one of the many aspects that I take great pride in and I will not jeopardize that at all.

For anyone who is interested in joining Literary Escapism, please email me at jackie AT literaryescapism DOT com with a subject of either LE Fantasy Reviewer or LE SciFi Reviewer, stating your interest and a review of a novel you have recently read.  Any emails without a review will automatically be deleted.  If anyone has any questions, simply email me without the subject heading (but if/when you are willing to submit a review, please use the appropriate heading).

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. It says “One caveat, you must be either a US resident. ” Did you mean to say US or Canadian resident? Or Did you just mean to say US resident… b/c if you did mean to say Canadian (hopefully!) I’d like to know! Umm… can a guy apply for the reviewer position?

  2. I don’t see why not, as far as the guy question goes. As long as the reviews were honest and he meets all of the criteria :D

    • @CaroleM – Unfortunately, I need to save money somewhere and keeping my reviewers in the US is one way of doing it since shipping boxes of books can be a little pricey. And male reviewers are more than welcome!
