Fire Study by M. Snyder

I am continually falling in love with this series. The newest novel by Maria Snyder, Fire Study picks up where Magic Study. Yelena’s new abilities as a Soulfinder concerns numerous members of the Sitian Council and she’s informed that she will be training with the one master magician that would like to see her dead. Of course, she is the same old Yelena and before she can begin her studies, political intrigue interrupts her life and sends her on a journey to find herself while she tries and stops a plot to bring Ixia and Sitia at war with each other.

Snyder continues to develop all of her characters, giving them all a more substantial role in Yelena’s future. We learn some revelations that are kind of shocking, but could prove interesting if they are brought up again in the next novel. We do get to see more of Valek and he’s up to his usual tricks. Valek is one of my favorite characters and I’m hoping that we’ll see more of him in the next novel. It seems like Snyder is setting it up so he will be, but we’ll have to wait and see if he does.

Overall, Snyder continues to deliver with Fire Study. The political intrigue, the adventures, the villains…they all come out of nowhere and we’re surprised by some of the revelations. I do have to say, that the ultimate badguy made my day. I wasn’t crazy about that character and while they probably would have been a good antagonist for Yelena, I could see it getting tiring after awhile. The romance between Valek and Yelena gets heated up and they go through some moments, but it strengthens their love. This entire series has been an awesome fine. If you like fantasy, romance, or historical fiction, then you definitely need to check out the first novel, Poison Study. While not a true historical fiction, it can read like one and still give the reader the satisfaction of a great novel.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
