Guest Author: Pamela Palmer

Today, I get to welcome Pamela Palmer to Literary Escapism. Pamela is the author of the Feral Warriors series and the latest novel, Rapture Untamed, was just released.

They are called Feral Warriors—an elite band of immortals who can change shape at will. Sworn to rid the world of evil, consumed by sorcery and seduction, their wild natures are primed for release . . .

The most combative—and tormented—of all the Ferals, Jag is a predator who hunts alone—until daemons terrorize the human population. To stop them, he partners with Olivia, a flame-haired Therian temptress as strong as she is beautiful. But Olivia is no ordinary immortal. The survivor of a vicious supernatural attack, she possesses a deadly and forbidden skill—one that must remain hidden, especially from the powerful Feral Warriors.

As Jag and Olivia’s sensual dance of dominance and seduction gets wilder and hotter, a dark force sets its sights on Olivia, threatening to destroy everything she has vowed to protect. And the only one who can save her soul is the arrogant jaguar shifter she lusts for but dares not love.

Make sure you stick around, we’re giving away three copies of the first Feral Warriors novel, Desire Untamed, to three lucky winners.

Mixing It Up in the Genre Scape

Once upon a time, if you wanted a good fantasy read (or a good romance, or a good thriller), there was probably only one place to find it. The Sci-fi/Fantasy aisle of your local bookstore or library (or the Romance aisle, or the Mystery/Suspense aisle). Times have changed. Individual books are getting harder and harder to categorize as once disparate genres are blending in new ways, more and more every day. And nowhere is this more obvious than in the realm of speculative fiction.

My Feral Warriors series is a prime example. Published by the Avon romance imprint of Harper Collins and shelved in the romance section, they’re far more than simple love stories. The series is about a group of nine shape shifting immortal warriors—the last shifters in the world. The premise: Eons ago, before the rise of human civilization, two immortal races battled the Daemons for control of the earth—the Mage, or magic ones, and the Therians, the mighty shape-shifters. Though traditional enemies, the Mage and Therians banded together to overcome the High Daemon, Satanan, ending his reign of terror and destroying his armies. The cost of victory was high. To win that ultimate battle, both races were forced to mortgage nearly all their power. Only one Therian among each of the ancient lines of shape-shifters was left with the power of his animal. Nine remain. They’re called the Feral Warriors.

While the protagonists of each book are a different hero and heroine who’ll ultimately fall in love, each book is also a high action thriller and another chapter in the overall tale. Ultimately, the series will be one story with a beginning, a middle, and a rip-roaring ending.

Book four in the series, Rapture Untamed, just hit shelves last month and one review, in particular, absolutely delighted me. Terri Ann Armstrong, Executive Editor of Suspense Magazine, and the author of Morning Menace, said, “This book was brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed this and coming from a devout fantasy novel hater, that says a lot about this book. I love it when someone proves me wrong—especially about myself. Palmer took me through a gamut of emotions at every turn. I found myself smiling and my heart thumping uncontrollably in all the right places, making it impossible to put this book down. Bravo!” Naturally, I’m delighted that she called the book brilliant, but what I especially loved was that she found the thriller elements she enjoys in a place she’d never expected. And it opened her to a new genre.

More and more, the lines between the genres are blurring. And not just in books. Take “True Blood” for example. It’s a little bit horror, a little bit romance with healthy doses of erotica, southern drama, and even touches of humor. More and more we ‘re finding good shows and reads outside our usual genres. And with the blurring of the traditional lines comes the potential for a wealth of fabulous new tales.

Three commenters will receive a copy of the first book in my Feral Warriors series, Desire Untamed.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Hello from an Underground ghoul,

When people ask me what kind of books I read, I have to say UF/PNR/Mystery. Is that what speculative fiction is? I really should google that . Basically I like a strong story with awesome romance and a kick ass female going against a pig-headed alpha-male . Can’t wait to read your series cause it sounds like it is exactly what I would like.

I have always avoided Fantasy cause it is usually a lot of detailed world building and the constant descriptions make it hard to concentrate on the story. Basically I have to work too hard to read it . But, I loved the Lord of the Rings and I am reading Helen Lowe’s “The Heir of Night” (won it) and I am really enjoying it. I also read anything Stephen King cause I like his story telling. Then there is Preston and Child who write the Pendergast stories. Great horror/mystery/thriller stuff.

    3 points for me!

  2. Hi Sharon! I believe Speculative Fiction encompasses all things weird (paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, etc.). At least that’s the way we’ve been using it on the Supernatural Underground. FYI, for those who aren’t familiar with the Underground, it’s a Facebook Page and Blogspot recently formed by a group of Harper Collins spec fic authors (paranormal romance, sci-fi/fantasy, and paranormal teen fiction).

  3. I just listened to the audiobook of To Tame A Land by Louis L’Amour.
I don’t usually read westerns but I actually enjoyed it.

  4. I read 2 books recently that expanded my reading boundary. First, was Lorelie James’s, “Shoulda Been A Cowboy,” which included a m/m/f scene. First one I’d ever read. I have been a mainstream romance reader for years so it was a bit unusual to read about a third party. Same thing with Megan Hart’s, “Pleasure and Purpose” – it too had atypical lovescenes. I love both these authors writing though, so something different won’t stop me from reading more.

  5. I was given one of Pamela’s book as a gift and the funny thing was i din’t think I was going to like it so I kept putting off reading it than once i picked it up i enjoyed it so much I went and got some of the other books. I am so looking forward to this new one which i tend to pick up this week end when i get paid. I so loved bitten by cupid. Will you be writing more books like this?

  6. Interesting that you’re all reading westerns!

Maria, I’m glad you’re enjoying the books. I’m definitely writing more Feral Warriors books and may be writing more novellas, though I don’t have any currently scheduled.

  7. I normally read PNR/UF, but have been venturing outside my normal preferences lately. I recently read 2 M/M romances by Amy Lane that were pretty great…Keeping Promise Rock and Making Promises.

  8. I’m reading and enjoying Seduce the darkness by Gena Showalter. I usually read more mainstream stuff.
    Your series sounds fantastic, Pamela!

  9. I never read suspense/mystery but my bookclub picked The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo last month. I read it and loved it. Now I must read the sequels also but I still have no desire to read other mysteries.

  10. I read The Men Who Stare at Goats. I loved the movie, so I had to read the book. I usually read romances, paranormal romance, historical romance.

  11. I just read Pamela’s story in Bitten by Cupid and now I am really interested in starting this series so I would LOVE to win the first book!
I think it has been awhile since I have read outside my comfort zone…one of the last ones I remember was See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson, which is a contemporary romance. Normally I don’t like contemporary romance but this book was great.

  12. Pamela, your series is already on my wishlist, but I haven’t had the time to read it yet…
a few weeks ago I tried PC Casts House of Night Series and was really suprised – normally I wouldn’t read it, but a friend told me to give it a try and now I’ve book 1 to 5 here…
    greetings :)

  13. +1 comment: The last book I read which was completely new and unusual for me was Touched by an Alien by Gini Koch, which was my 1st sci-fi novel, and I LOVED it! It was fantastic!! I’m so glad I read it, now I’m addicted! :-D

  14. Oh wow I read pretty much anything and everything I can get my hands on :). I enjoy all heat levels and subgeneres of romance, as well as a bit of straight mystery/thriller, and scifi/fantasy. I don’t believe I can pinpoint a specific book I’ve read outside prefs. I will say I’ve read more cowboy books over the past year than what I used to.
