Escapist Newsletter (Vol 4 Issue 10)

Skeleton CrewI really don’t have anything new from LE to report this month.  Well, I probably do, but my brain is still a little fried trying to catch up after taking most of August off.  So I don’t have anything right now.  Although, did you hear LE is giving away two sets of Laura Stamps The Rune Witch Series trilogy.  The contest ends October 12th.

Cover Extravaganza

Since I’m late in getting the newsletter out this month, I’m throwing the cover section up here for a change and scattering a sample of the new ones throughout the newsletter.  In fact, I may start doing this since Facebook has changed their album thumbnails (yes, I was cheating and using their thumbnails *grin*).

This month there were 76 different covers revealed, so obviously not all of them are appearing here.  Sorry guys, that would simply kill my bandwidth and you would definitely get annoyed with the slow load time. However, I did save them all over at the Facebook page. If you want to see all of them, in their original sizes, head over here.

There were a ton of great sources: Paperback Dolls, Galaxy Express, Wicked Scribes, All Things Urban Fantasy, Michelle’s Book Blog, Sordid Fantasy, Escape Between the Pages, Indie Paranormal Book Reviews, Dark Faerie Tales and SciFiGuy.

From the Author Sites

Nalini Singh announced the title to the next Psy-Changeling novel.  We’ll get to read Hawke’s story when Kiss of Snow comes out next year.

Wicked Lovely will be hitting theaters sooner than we’ve been hoping for.  Melissa Marr announced that her series had been optioned earlier this year and normally that simply means there’s a chance we’ll see it at some point.  That is not the case here.  There is a director attached to the project already!  Variety is reporting that Kimberly Peirce has been tapped by Universal to direct the film.  I was going to post other sites also covering this fantastic news, but there are just too many.

I’m pretty sure we’ve seen the cover blurb for the final Fever novel, Shadowfever, by Karen Marie Moning; but I was looking at it and it seemed like a few things were added since the last time I saw it.  So here it is again:

In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac, and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves.

Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman that haunts her dreams? More importantly, who is Mac and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?

From the luxury of the Lord Master’s penthouse, to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover, to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac’s journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and make a choice that will either save the world…or destroy it.

Marta Acosta has posted the draft of her novel Nancy’s Theory of Style as a free read via Scribd.

Nancy Holder, author of Crusade, has a fabulous new website.

Check out what you can now buy online – it’s the soundtrack to Outlander: The Musical.  Speaking out Outlander…we will have the movie in the near future!  At least, according the IMDB page we will. I have more posted about this here.

Shiloh Walker has posted the blurb for the next Grimm Circle novel, Tarnished Knight, as well as a mini-excerpt.

Jaye Wells has fabulous news.  She’s sold the next two Sabina Kane novels to Orbit!  Book four doesn’t have a title yet, but so far it’s being known as the Blue book.  Wells is anticipating the series ending with book five, but that’s not definitely, so hopefully there’ll be more.

Have we seen the cover blurb for Kelley Armstrong’s next Darkest Powers novel, The Gathering, due out in April 2011?

Maya lives in a small medical-research town on Vancouver Island. How small? You can’t find it on the map. It has less than two-hundred people, and her school has only sixty-eight students—for every grade from kindergarten to twelve.

Now, strange things are happening in this claustrophobic town, and Maya’s determined to get to the bottom of them. First, the captain of the swim team drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. A year later, mountain lions start appearing around Maya’s home, and they won’t go away. Her best friend, Daniel, starts experiencing “bad vibes” about certain people and things. It doesn’t help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret—and he’s interested in one special part of Maya’s anatomy: Her paw-print birthmark.

Kerrelyn Sparks announced the title to the tenth Love at Stakes novel.  We’ll have Vampire Mine March 29, 2011 and it’ll feature Connor Buchanan.

I was browsing through Jim C. Hines’ blog and saw the coolest thing – a Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back Chess Set.  Now that’s just a freaking awesome chess set in my opinion.

The artists behind The Exile, the graphic novel of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, has put a whole new meeting on the term “graphic novel”.  They did not leave out the scene of Jamie and Claire’s wedding night!

Eileen Wilks has changed the title to her next World of the Lupi novel. Instead of Ghost, we will have Death Magic sometime towards the end of 2011 (hopefully not in 2012).  Wilks will also have a novella in new anthology that will be out November 2011 (there isn’t a title for either yet).   Here’s what she has to say about the story:

This one’s going to be about “baby’s first Christmas”–Cynna & Cullen’s baby, that is–and some unusual teenage delinquents.  Turns out adolescent rebellion crosses species lines just fine.  No title yet, but among other things you’ll find out what the “C” couple named their baby.

Nalini Singh has posted the cover blurb for her third Guild Hunter novel, Archangel’s Consort.

PC Cast had fabulous news this weekend.  Her Goddess Summoning series (Goddess of the Sea, Goddess of Spring, Goddess of Light, Goddess of the Rose, Goddess of Love, Warrior Rising and Goddess of Legend) is going to be adapted into a graphic novel.

Some extremely sad news in the publishing world.  Jennifer Rardin passed away on September 20th at the age of 45 – she was entirely too young.  Nothing has been said as to the cause, but for fans of the Jaz Parks series, the seventh novel has been completed and will still be published in June 2011.

Jenna Black has unveiled the cover and official blurb for her second Fairewalker novel, Shadowspell, which will be out January 4, 2011. Plus, in her latest newsletter, Jenna also mentioned that Sirensong will be the title for the third novel.

New Excerpts or Reading for Free

A Glimpse of DarknessA Glimpse of Darkness, a “fan-driven, multi-authored, chain story, where readers have the chance to decide the outcome of a wholly original paranormal story”, by Lara Adrian, Harry Connolly, Kelly Meding, Stacia Kane, and Lucy A. Snyder – first chapter by Lara Adrian (author of Taken By Midnight) and second chapter by Harry Connolly (author of Game of Cages).

Ilona Andrews has posted a new snippet for Magic Slays, the fifth Kate Daniels novel.  Per the post, the snippet picks up where the one in Bayou Moon leaves off.  Although honestly, I think we’ve seen it before.

Karen Chance has posted an excerpt for her fifth Cassie Palmer novel, Hunt the Moon, which will be out June 2011.

Patricia Briggs has posted an excerpt for her upcoming re-release, Wolfsbane, which is due out next month.

Shiloh Walker has been posting random snippets from her release, Veil of Shadows.  You can find them here, here and here.

Ilona Andrews has posted a snippet from Magic Dreams, which is Jim and Dali’s story and will appear in the June 2011 anthology, Hexed.

Lara Adrian has posted an excerpt for her next Midnight Breeds novel, Taken by Midnight, which will be out September 28th.

Suvudu has posted an excerpt for Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson.

Ilona Andrews has posted Chapter 4 of their novel, Bayou Moon.

Katie MacAlister has posted the first chapter to her upcoming novel, In the Company of Vampires.

Diana Gabaldon has posted two excerpts from the eight Outlander novel.  Let’s just say we find out Jem has grown up and something happens to Jamie.

Featured Book: Fray by Joss Whedon

Fulfilling a youthful dream, Joss Whedon fast-forwards his Buffy mythos with this exciting graphic novel even Slayer virgins can follow. Melaka Fray is a girl-thief who’s uncannily quick of wit, reflexes and healing abilities. Stuck in the deadly slums of Haddyn—a poisoned hell once known as Manhattan—she runs afoul of both mutant crime lords and air-surveilling cops, unaware that she has a great destiny.

Because Fray is something the world hasn’t seen in 200 years—a Slayer of otherworldly monsters. And now, in a world that doesn’t notice the vampires on its streets, a demon Watcher has come summoning Fray to her calling. But can a street kid without family or friends unite a city against a demonic plot to consume mankind?

From the Reader

It would be wrong if I didn’t mention this – Book Chick City has this great fornightly feature called Books We Love and this latest edition features little ole me.  That’s right, I was over at Book Chick City talking about five novels that have survived the various novel purges my library has gone through.  You can read past editions here.

Want to build your own Dalek?  If so, SciFi Wire has unearthed the blueprints and are sharing them with everyone.

Jackie U had a fabulous Off the Fang over at Bitten by Books where she talked about the deplorable practice of stripping book covers.

The BBC’s Being Human is being Americanized?  I had not heard that.

Angieville has discovered the worlds perfect desk for any bookworm – it’s made entirely out of books.

Day, from the Paperback Dolls, was at Dragon*Con and shared all sorts of news.  The first being a possible blurb for the next Anita Blake novel straight from Laurell K Hamilton herself.  Day also has some tasty tidbits from the TrueBlood panel.

The Galaxy Express has a great roundup of book sites that review science fiction romance.  I’m still new when it comes to SciFi, so I’m definitely going to be checking out some of these sites.

I’m not one who solicits review novels, but I know a lot of other bloggers do.  So for those who want some insider knowledge, All Things Urban Fantasy has another great How I Blog post up and Abigail talked with a few publishers specifically about this topic.

Does anyone have a cool $100k laying around they could loan me? I want my own Stargate! Or should I go for the Atlantis Gate Room Stargate Segment, which might fit in my house better.

About Jackie 3282 Articles
I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
