I just finished the first novel, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire, in Kerrelyn Sparks Love at Stake series. The title kind of doesn’t make sense to me. When I first picked this book up, I was expecting a paranormal romance version of how to pick up a guy or something that was kind of light and fun. This really isn’t like that. The novel focuses on Roman Draganesti, the vampire, and Shanna Whelan, a dentist who is also running from the Russian mafia. We get the usual “he’s a vampire?!”, but Sparks takes it for a little different spin. Shanna’s reaction isn’t your typical one and she even throws us a pretty decent plot line. One that could be seen as being done before, but I can’t think of another novel off the top of my head.
Overall, How to Marry a Millionaire Vampire is pretty good. There was some good character development and the plot has the potential to carry on for a couple of books. There is an obvious end, so it wouldn’t have to, but it is something that could continue to pop up. The characters are likable and they each have their own personalities that seem to work for them. They don’t come off as “being” vampires, but when they do, they are a little more softer about it than serious and dark. I did like this book and I’m going to continue on with the series. Hopefully the books continue to be just as good, if not better.
