Quick Update

All August contests are now closed, but there are a couple still open through this week:

  1. Anya Bast is giving away a copy of either Wicked Enchantment or Cruel Enchantment – winner’s choice. Contest ends Sept 7th.
  2. We’re giving away a copy of Ann Aguirre’s Skin Game and a Sirantha Jax novel. Contest ends Sept 9th.
  3. Jeaniene Frost is giving away three copies of Eternal Kiss of Darkness. Contest ends Sept 9th.

I’ll announce the winners for the contests later this week.  Right now, I’m looking at my Google Reader, with it’s 1000+ posts, and working on putting together the next edition of the Escapist Newsletter.  Since I haven’t been doing news posts all month, it’s going to take me a little longer than normal since I’m sure I’ve missed a ton of great stuff.

Starting the week of September 20th, LE will be back to it’s regular posting schedule (MWF news posts, TR author spots) since school will be back in session and a newborn/infant is far easier to work with than an energetic preschooler.  *grin*  Until then, I’m back, just working while I can.

Speaking of author spots, LE is currently booked through November, so if any author would like to schedule a spot for 2010, please don’t wait to contact me.  If there’s a certain date you’re looking for, please consult the calendar and send the date with your request.

With school beginning again, I’m planning on getting some more reading done, or at least get caught up with the girls in reviews.  As such, there’ll be some fabulous book reviews popping up.  I know my reading has sorely been lacking and I’m totally going to blame it on the pregnancy.  Now that Simon is here, I’m hoping to rectify that.  I’m thinking I have a pretty good start on that since I currently have three books open; and since I am in the mood to share, here’s a teaser from each of those novels:

Killbox by Ann Aguirre, the fourth novel in her Sirantha Jax series.

From page 51:

He’s right. This is too big for us alone. Thankfully, we have official sanction to sovle the problem however we see fit – and Conglomerate backing to make it happen.

From page 121:

Before I can decide whether it’s worth the risk, a man jostles me. I think he wants to order, so I ease back from teh counter. When it happens a third time, I spin to face him.

Mind Games by Carolyn Crane, the first novel in her Disillusionist series.

From page 111:

I stand, keenly attuned to my suroundings, to Aggie. The skin fixation, the method of kiling she used – it all links up in my mind. He had an affair, and the death was cleansing: a brain picked cleaned.

From page 223:

I instruct him to back up on the shoulder. He protests, but I insist. “A little more, stop – no, a couple feet more.” And then it’s visible again: the face in exquisite detail, etched so you can only see it when the headlights hit it at a certain angle. The big long beard with the upturned curl at the end, wavy curls tumbling down over his shoulders, just like…

The Bride of Casa Dracula by Marta Acosta, the third novel in her Casa Dracula series.

At 55%:

There are times when it is best to shut the hell up. I grew more and more anxious on the ride. My stomach cramped with nerves and I broke into a cold sweat. The sheriff had a look of satisfaction when he saw me clutching the blanket tightly. I wanted to smack the snide right off him, but he’d probably interpret that as a propensity for violence.

“When you know everybody, you always see them everywhere. It’s so convenient, because you’re never a stranger anywhere.” By everywhere, she meant wealthy enclaves, and by everybody, she meant the rich who inhabited them. By this thinking, one was able to ignore inconsequential people who populated those vast wastelands without boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
