Sunday Surprise – the SFBC Edition!

I kept seeing the Science Fiction Book Club popping up in random places, but had never stopped by.  After seeing a promotion for “5 books for $5”, I decided to make the excursion over to check it out. That was probably a very very bad thing. I love omnibus editions (they take up less space on my shelves) and I came across three excellent ones.  Three fabulous authors with the first three novels in their series in one place – love it!

Wizard for Hire by Jim Butcher (includes Storm Front / Fool Moon / Grave Peril)

Plagued by giant scorpions, tormented ghosts and psychotic werewolves? Call Chicago private eye Harry Dresden—the only practicing professional wizard in the country.

Preying for Mercy by Patricia Briggs (includes Moon Called / Blood Bound / Iron Kissed)

Kennewick, Washington car mechanic Mercy Thompson doesn’t exactly have a normal life. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she’s fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, she’s not exactly normal herself. Because Mercy Thompson is a walker—a shape-shifter who can change into a coyote at will….

Moon Called: When Mercy’s repair shop becomes the hideout of choice for a young runaway werewolf, she’s thrust into a power-struggle between packs that threaten to “out” them all—in a way that could get them killed.

Blood Bound: Mercy agrees to act as extra muscle when a vampire friend delivers a message to another of his kind. But this new vampire has a demon inside, a sorcerer who’s wreaking havoc on Washington’s Tri-Cities. And Mercy’s pulled into the fray.

Iron Kissed: Mercy can shift her shape—but not her loyalty. Her mentor/boss has been arrested for killing a citizen of the fae reservation. And since the fae—his own kind—seem content to let him rot behind bars, it’s up to Mercy to clear his name…and that could cost her her life.

Club Vamprye by Laurell K Hamilton (includes Guilty Pleasures / The Laughing Corpse / Circus of the Damned)

“I’m Anita Blake, expert on creatures of the night. Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn’t repeatable.

In my job—I’m an animator; I raise the dead—I’ve seen just about everything. I’ve dined with shapeshifters, danced with werewolves and been wooed, but not won, by Jean-Claude, the most powerful bloodsucker in St. Louis. When a serial killer started offing vampires, it was Jean-Claude who tapped me to find the killer. Later, a rogue vamp named Alejandro hit town and wanted to make me his human servant. A war of the undead had begun. Over me. I’d have been flattered if my life weren’t at stake.

Speaking of life…and death…every animator knows that the older the zombie, the bigger the death required to raise it. These days, the only death “big enough” is a human sacrifice. I don’t kill vampires for the money, and I don’t kill people, so all the money in the world wasn’t enough for me to take the job Harold Gaynor was offering. Someone else did, though—an insane animator who wasn’t just raising the dead…he was raising Hell. And it was up to me to stop it.”

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
