Weekly Geeks #1 – Discovering New Blogs

So I’ve joined a couple of different reading challenges – 50 Books (Authors) in 2008, Herding Cats, and the Numbers Challenge – and I’m including one more. This one is a little different. It’s actually a blogging challenge and each week there will be a new blogging theme. This weeks theme is “Discover New Blogs Week“. The challenge is to check out 5 new blogs from their list, leave a comment on their site, and then blog about it on our own site. So, I’ve picked my 5 and here they are:

  1. Books & Coffee – This blog caught my interest by the very first post. Anyone who has Penn & Teller on their site has to be worth the read. I love Penn & Teller.
  2. Dog’s Eye View – is a photography blog that has some really pretty shots on it.
  3. This Book Is For You – Finally, someone who doesn’t like the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Not that I’m saying I don’t like it, but it was kind of intimidating that everyone was liking it that I was afraid to read it in case I didn’t like it.
  4. Reading Reflections – I am a fan of historical fiction, but I prefer finding new novels through recommendations since some can be a bit overblown. The review of Widow of the South by Robert Hicks was so good that it was added to my TBR list.
  5. Tiny Reading Room – Finally someone who has reviewed the Katie Chandler series by Shanna Swendson. I’ve been seeing this book around that I’ve been interested in someones opinion on it. Now that I’ve seen that someone does like it, I’m definitely going to give it a try.

Since we’re promoting new blog sites through the Weekly Geeks challenge, I thought I would also promote some of the blogs that I frequent that are really enjoyable.

  1. Alpha Heroes – Nicola and I share a lot of the same taste. She’s given me a couple new books to check out as well as verified that some books I’m looking at are worth the read.
  2. Amberkatze’s Book Blog – Another one who likes the paranormal, Amber tends to find books that I’m not familiar with.
  3. Aussie Sue – one of the other girls that gives my TBR list a boost. Sue doesn’t also focus on the paranormal, so I can find different novels that are just as good.
  4. Love Vampires – this is a great place to get my vampire fix. They also give some great author interviews.
  5. Rhinoa’s Ramblings – Rhinoa tends to read a lot of books, that are on my TBR, before I get a chance to.
  6. Sam’s Book Blog – I’m always hearing about great books, but they tend to be out of the genres I read, so I’m hesitate to try them. However, Sam usually gives some really good reviews, so I’ve been losing my hesitation in trying them.
  7. SMS Book Reviews – I actually found a book that I need to remember to check out at the library – Parenting Your Toddler: the Expert’s Guide to the Tough and Tender Years by P. Shimm and K. Ballen. Yeah, it’s not something I generally read, but it really stuck out for me since my son is starting his terrible twos…at least I hope that’s what he’s doing.
  8. Vampire Wire – This site is actually maintained by Marta Acosta and she gives lots of updates relating anything to vampires. She doesn’t stick with just novels either. You can find news regarding television, movies and anything else that has a bloodsucking twist to it. She also has a lot of author interviews.
  9. World According to Books – I haven’t been to this site too often, but when I do get there, I usually find something to read.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
