AZ Challenge & 1st in Series

I’m actually becoming a sucker for challenges. I’m starting two of them, but I’m picking books off of my TBR so it shouldn’t be too hard. Well, it’s a little hard for one of them.

The first challenge is “1st in series”. The idea is to read the first novel in 12 different series. So, here are my series picks:

  • Bardsley, Michele – Broken Heart, Oklahoma
  • Bartlett, Gerry – Glory St. Clair
  • Elrod, P.N. – Vampire Files
  • Gleason, Colleen – Gardella Vampire Chronicles
  • Havens, Candace – Bronwyn the Witch
  • McCarthy, Erin – Vegas Vampires
  • Meyer, Stephanie – Twilight
  • Paolini, Christopher – Dragon series
  • Robb, J.D. – In Death
  • Roquelaure, A. N. – Sleeping Beauty
  • Swendson, Shanna – Kate Chandler
  • Viehl, Lynn – Darkyn

My Second Challenge is the AZ Challenge. This one involves 52 different books and could give me a run for my money. The idea is to create two lists, one for authors and one for titles. Each list contains a book that starts with the alphabet. I do have a few holes to fill in, so if anyone can recommend books, I’m all ears. I need authors for J, N, O, Q, U, X, and Y. I need titles for X, Y, and Z.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. That’s a cool list of challenge books. I need to start the Gardella books and check out Candace Havens and finally read Christopher Paolini. Also I hope to give Sherrilyn Kenyon and Richelle Mead a go at some point either this year or next. More Sunny is always a good thing as well!

For J I read Brian Jacques who is a children’s author and is best known for his book Redwall which might be worth looking at. Garth Nix is great for an N author and I am reading a manga comic which is gerat called Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba which is a good O author and short read. Jane Yolen is a great author for a Y name who writes fairy tale type stories. I just read Briar Rose and reviewed it on my blog if you fancy having a read. The only X author I have found really is Xinran who has written a book called Sky Buriel. I haven’t read it yet and am hoping it is good… For my Y book I will be reading Yarrow by the wonderful Charles De Lint who writes fantasy and is one of my favourite authors. Another fairy tale book is Zel by Donna Jo Napoli which is also on my list. Hope that helps, I know you read mostly urban fantasy but these aren’t too different…

  2. A few ideas — these are most historical romance writers if you don’t mind branching out from the paranormal world :-)

    J – Eloisa James
    O – Maggie Osborne
    Q – Julia Quinn or
Q – Amanda Quick (a/k/a Jayne Anne Krentz) — you’d like her Arcane Society books, both paranormal AND historical.

I’ll think some more on your other missing letters…

  3. I love Julia Quinn and Amanda Quick! I actually forgot about them and
then added Julia Quinn’s new novel “The Lost Duke of Wyndham” or
something like that. Have you read Quick’s Lake & March trilogy?

  4. Lake & March, hmmm, not ringing a bell. Amanda Quick isn’t on my “auto-buy” list for some reason even though Krentz is. I think they started to get a little repetitive on me after a while. I’ll revisit….

  5. Lake & March – it starts with Slight Shady, then Don’t Look Back, and ends with Late for the Wedding. It takes a look at mesmerism during the Regency period. Lake is the mersmerist and March is the private detective. It’s really good. The first two are the only romance novels I have in hard cover.

  6. Do you have to read every book to the end?

There are a few of the 1st series books that I wouldn’t recommend if you really have to finish the whole book.

Anyway good luck and keep us updated on how you are doing!

Maybe I will do some kind of challenge next year…it may slow my reading down ;)

  7. Welcome to the A ~ Z Challenge AND 1st in a Series Challenge!!! I’m glad you found us. :) You’ve got a great start on the A ~ Z. I hope you enjoy both challenges and discover some great books. Happy Reading!

  8. Oh! I just remembered…please come sign up for the 1st in a Series Challenge. :) Also, remember to come back and link your reviews!
