Winter’s Passage by J. Kagawa

Winter's PassageI’m Team Ash all the way, so when I first realized that Winter’s Passage, a short novella between The Iron King and The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa, was about Meghan and Ash’s journey to the Winter Court, I was excited. Finally, Ash and Meghan would get some one-on-one time, something I found distinctly lacking in The Iron King. With only a brief cameo from Grimalkin, Meghan and Ash did spend practically the entire novella together.

Meghan Chase used to be an ordinary girl…until she discovered that she is really a faery princess. After escaping from the clutches of the deadly Iron fey, Meghan must follow through on her promise to return to the equally dangerous Winter Court with her forbidden love, Prince Ash. But first, Meghan has one request: that they visit Puck–Meghan’s best friend and servant of her father, King Oberon–who was gravely injured defending Meghan from the Iron Fey.

Yet Meghan and Ash’s detour does not go unnoticed. They have caught the attention of an ancient, powerful hunter–a foe that even Ash may not be able to defeat….

The whole point of the novella was to show the adventure that Ash and Meghan endured on their quest to get to Tir Na Nog, or the Winter Palace.  They made a quick stop to see Puck, who is still asleep after being mortally wounded in The Iron King but have to rush on because they were being hunted by the Hunter.

Even though they’re on the run, or perhaps because of it, Ash didn’t hide his emotions as thoroughly as he did in The Iron King. That gave both Meghan and the readers insight into his internal struggle between wanting to keep Meghan safe and being bound by his oath to take her back to Tir Na Nog.

Overall, Winter’s Passage is a short, fast paced read that will leave you breathless with a burning desire to get your hands on The Iron Daughter.
