Crazed Hearts by S. Walker

Crazed HeartsI really do love Shiloh Walker’s Grimm Circle series, and ever since we met Ren in No Prince Charming, I’ve really wanted to know who he was.  He didn’t get his HEA with Elle, but he did at least get some closure in I Thought It Was You. Now, with Crazed Hearts, it’s time for his HEA and it’s quite a bit different than I thought it would be.

He’s no fairy-tale prince. But he just may be the hero she needs.

Ren has always danced along the fine line between being a little bit crazy and being overcome by a darkness that’s haunted him since his mortal days. As an empath, he prefers to live far from people who would leak their emotions all over him, so he’s not expecting the woman who drives right into the heart of his wood. She has a cursed book with her and demons hot on her heels. Even more surprising are her abilities and the reaction Ren has to her.

Aileas is on the run. She just isn’t certain if she’s running from something real or imagined. One thing is for sure, her brother is dead and she’s certain the book she found has something to do with his death. She really starts to doubt her sanity when she meets a hot but somewhat crazed man in the middle of nowhere.

He calls himself Ren, and although he doesn’t seem to be out to hurt her, he definitely wants something. She just doesn’t understand what. She does know what she wants though. She wants him, and the shadows and darkness she glimpses inside him don’t matter. At least, right up until he claims to be a guardian angel.

And she thought she was going crazy.

Ever since Ren showed up, I’ve wanted to know which fairy tale he was from.  I couldn’t think of which one had a “Ren” in it or anything even remotely similar to the name Ren.  I can’t be the only one who has been wondering this, and while I could say who he is, I’m not going to because of who he is.  Let’s just say, you won’t see it coming and yet it’s the perfect tale to bastardize for the Grimm series.  I will give you one hint, I wouldn’t call Ren’s story a fairy tale, it’s more of a horror.

Regardless, back to the story.  What can I say…Walker weaves a fantastic story in Crazed Hearts and it’s quite different than what we’ve seen with either Candy Houses or  No Prince Charming.  There’s not as much action this time around; in fact, we really don’t see any at all.  We see plenty of hints to it and it is going on in the background, but Ren and Aileas really don’t have much to do with it. Instead, the story very much focuses on helping Ren deal with the trauma he had in his mortal life and paving the way for his own HEA.

In all honestly, the story flows really well and quite quickly; you don’t realize you’re over halfway through it until you are.  There may not be a lot of action, but there’s enough to keep your attention all the while telling a fabulous story.  Seriously, if you’re looking for a great story, I would definitely run to your favorite ebook retailer and pick up Crazed Hearts.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Great review Jackie! I love this series and can’t wait for Tarnished Knight to come out later this month. I was also trying to figure out who exactly Ren was the whole time. For awhile I thought he might be the pied piper…LOL!
