Darker Angels by MLN Hanover

Darker AngelsJam packed with a ton of action, Darker Angels is the second in the Black Sun’s Daughter series and does not disappoint!

When Jayné Heller’s uncle Eric died, she inherited a fortune beyond all her expectations — and a dangerous mission in a world she never knew existed. Reining in demons and supernatural foes is a formidable task, but thankfully Jayné has vast resources and loyal allies to rely on. She’ll need both to tackle a bodyswitching serial killer who’s taken up residence in New Orleans, a city rich in voodoo lore and dark magic.

Working alongside Karen Black, a highly confident and enigmatic ex-FBI agent, Jayné races to track down the demon’s next intended host. But the closer she gets, the more convinced she becomes that nothing in this beautiful, wounded city is exactly as it seems. When shocking secrets come to light, and jealousy and betrayal turn trusted friends into adversaries, Jayné will soon come face-to-face with an enemy that knows her all too well, and won’t rest until it has destroyed everything she loves most….

In Unclean Spirits we learn about how Jayné acquired her uncles business and saw her start to grow as well as discover that when in a crunch she has some sort of abilities that no one can really explain.

Darker Angels takes place a short time after Unclean Spirits from where we  last read about Jayné and her companions, and an interesting phone call comes in for her uncle – to which Jayné informs the client he is deceased and accepts the job anyways.

Right away Darker Angels has a lot more action than Unclean Spirits, and it’s pretty much non stop.  Jayné still hasn’t really learned that much about what her uncle was really into and the powers she may or may not possess are still in the dark as well.  Along with the action comes an added relationship aspect which, like many stories, can complicate matters! lol I wasn’t too fond of how Hanover wrote a few of the tidbids (which I won’t spoil), but over all I think it adds a whole new level of character development that we may not have seen otherwise.

The setting for Darker Angels is New Orleans, where Katrina hit the worst, and I think Hanover did a wonderful job incorporating his story with the natural disaster. I truly love Hanover’s word and story-building in this one, the plot and story flow smoothly throughout and it really makes for a great page turner.

Once I read to a certain point in the plot, I had an idea of what the outcome would be (sorta) but at times I was left doubting myself on whether I was right or not – and I absolutely love that about Hanover’s writing. To me it’s ok if you can sort of guess where the story is going to go.. after all, who these days writes stories that end with everyone dead with the bad guys winning?

Overall, if you are an Urban Fantasy fan, Darker Angels is the book for you! Though I would highly suggest reading them in order first, or you will become really confused! :)

  1. This series keeps being recommended to me by Amazon but I was a little unsure. After reading this review I think I’ll give a whirl – thanks!

  2. You’re welcome! :D

It really is a great series. Of course I am a UF kind of gal.. I love the action and story progression over the romance. Though I do like romance too but not as much as my UF :)
