Last Sacrifice by R. Mead

Last SacrificeI hate when a series ends; especially when I get so invested in the characters and everything that’s going on in their lives. I’ve been told though that all good things must come to an end, and the sixth book in the vampire academy series, Last Sacrifice, by Richelle Mead is definitely a good thing.

It all comes down to now.

Murder. Love. Jealousy. And the ultimate sacrifice.

The Queen is dead and the Moroi world will never be the same. Now, with Rose awaiting wrongful execution and Lissa in a deadly struggle for the royal throne, the girls find themselves forced to rely upon enemies and to question those they thought they could trust…

But what if true freedom means sacrificing the most important thing of all?

Each other.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. Usually I have at least some idea of what’s coming. I mean by the sixth book, it shouldn’t have been too hard to figure out that Rose was most likely going to cause some sort of ruckus. Not least of all because in the last book she was accused of a pretty heavy crime, but as far as the out come to everything. I completely didn’t see it coming.

I am resisting the urge to make this review full of spoilers because Last Sacrifice certainly has a lot to talk about. From Rose’s relationship with Adrian all the way to Lisa’s standing as a royal – everything is covered. I wasn’t necessarily happy with how some of the character’s were left (one instance in particular), but I think that’s more of my issue with how the character dealt with this particular situation and less of Ms. Mead’s writing. What’s that particular issue you may ask? Well, I really can’t say squat without giving anything away, and that’s the problem that I’ve come across when attempting to write this review. All I want to do is make this the most spoiler induced review that you’ve ever read, but I’m encouraged to refrain from that. Not that I don’t see the value in not giving major plot points away, but damn if I don’t want to talk about every single thing that I’ve read in Last Sacrifice. Sufficed to say that for the most part everybody is given a happy ending. Honestly,  I think that if the story of Rose and the gang were going to end anywhere that this would be the place for it.

Certainly the ending was one of the only points in Last Sacrifice that didn’t have so much going on. Which makes sense, it being the ending and all. The plot was chock full of action and I couldn’t for the life of me guessed who the killer turned out to be. Although, it made sense for this particular person to have done what they did. I don’t think I would have ever thought who it was in a million years. So, it keeps you guessing throughout.

Overall, Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead was a fitting, if slightly frustrating, ending.  The frustration coming not only from the fact that it’s the last in an amazing series, but because not everybody that I wanted to have a happy ending got one. This entire series took me a little while to warm up to (I wasn’t too crazy about the first couple books), but now I’m in love with it. I’m sure glad that I started reading Vampire Academy, and I encourage everybody to pick up these amazing reads.

SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER

Okay, what the heck was I alluding to in the above review? Here it is – I hated the way that Adrian was left!! When he was first introduced I thought he was an ass for trying to distract Rose from Dimitri, but then he started to really grow on me. Now, just when I start really pulling for him, Rose goes and dumps him, and before that she used him. I know, I know,  it may have been needed in order to save Lissa and all, but I feel like it could’ve been handled better on Rose’s part. Now he’s all ‘I’m going to drink and smoke, and do all the bad things that I stopped doing for you’.  Then on the other hand, I’m really glad that Rose and Dimitri are back together because I feel like they are better suited for each other. Argh, I’m so torn. I’m curious though, for anybody who’s read the book. How do you feel about what happened in the Rose, Dimitri, Adrian triangle?

    • I’ve heard that Adrian is one of the main characters in the spin-off series, although whether he’s the main love interest or not hasn’t been revealed. At least I don’t think it has.

  1. I wanted to throw the book across the room after the way she dumped him. He was so heart broken! I’m still on his team, so I hope he gets a happy ending in Bloodlines.

  2. I just finished reading this series & I agree with you that Dimitri seemed like the better choice for Rose. I feel bad for Adrian, because he really grew on me throughout the series, but I think that the way Richelle Mead handled the whole situation made it feel more “real” to me. I am hoping that Adrian will get a happy ending in the new series. That would actually be more fitting because I feel like he needs to mature a bit.
