Escapist Newsletter (Vol. 3 Issue 3)

Check out the cover for the new Merry book, Divine Misdemeanors, which is due to be released October 27, 2009 and I know I can not wait for that day (well, aside from June 2nd when Skin Trade comes out).

Tomorrow is the last day for the White Witch Black Curse contest here at Literary Escapism.  Enter for a chance to win a copy of the novel.  Plus you still have time to get into the Rogue contest which ends on Tuesday.

I have heard some awesome Patricia Briggs news.  The next Mercy Thompson novel, after Bone Crossed, will be called Silver Born.  I guess she announced the fifth Mercy title at the signing in Ann Arbor (thankfully, my cousin was there to hear this news) and it will be out sometime next year.  Silver Born will be out (tentatively) February 2010.  There is also a third Alpha Omega novel tentatively scheduled for August 2010, but since Briggs is still writing Hunting Ground, the third one doesn’t have a title or a plot.  But we do have a release date.  And if anyone is interested, the Science Fiction Book Club has the first three Mercy novels in an omnibus, called Preying for Mercy, for only $15.

There was a little more that came out of the signing last night – mainly the idea that Briggs has been approached by HBO for a series about her Mercy novels.  Now, I wasn’t there, so I don’t know how accurate that is, but it sounds like we could be getting a Mercy pilot at some time.  If Mercy does end up on HBO, something tells me I’ll have to try and convince the hubby to get it.

Devon Monk announced that she sold the next three novels in her Magic series for a total of five books being published.  She’s put up a tentative release schedule and it looks like we’ll be getting new novels every 6 months.

Check out this gorgeous cover for Diana Gabaldon’s An Echo in the Bone.  I mentioned awhile ago that An Echo in the Bone had a release date – that may or may not be true.  According to an update on Gabaldon’s site (dated 2/12/09), she hasn’t received an official release date from the publisher and I guess Amazon has a tendency to throw up a date on their own to help with preorders.  So while the release date is listed as September 22, 2009, it could possibly change.  Either way, it gives us something to look forward to.

Interviews:

I guess this pretty much confirms the rumor that the CW will produce a show based on LJ Smith’s Vampire Diaries.

Here’s the first batch of new covers this month: Faith Hunter’s Skinwalker (July 7, 2009); Caitlin Kittredge’s Witch Craft (September 1, 2009); Lori Devoti’s Amazon Ink (May 26, 2009); and Kim Harrison’s Once Dead, Twice Shy (May 26, 2009).

Something Wicked has unleashed their new site design.  It’s kind of cool – you should check it out.  The League of Reluctant Adults was given a makeover and has grown a little as well.

Jenna Black announced the title for the fifth Morgan Kingsley novel in her February newsletter.  It’s going to be the Devil’s Playground, but no word on a tentative release date.  She’s still working on it, so I’m going to take a guess and say sometime early next year.

Kim Harrison has posted her Once Dead, Twice Shy tour and she’s going back to Dayton, Ohio! Well, she’s hitting a lot of the spots that were cut from her White Witch, Black Curse tour, so if you were trying to see her then and had your city cut, maybe she’ll be showing up. There’s another treat for this tour, she’s not going to be alone. She’ll be with a few other authors, so it’ll be twice or more the fun. For the city listing, check out her event page for the details.

Joss Whedon is the new recipient of the Bradbury Award for excellence in screenwriting, as presented by Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Joss will receive his aware in April at the Nebula Awards.

JR Ward has finally updated her website and the Lover Avenged cover is up on her site and she has Excerpt 1 & Excerpt 2 of the novel up.  Woot!  Lover Avenged will be out April 28, 2009.  I got caught up reading it and I think I’m looking forward to this one.  I haven’t made it through Lover Enshrined yet, but this one I may not want to wait to read.

If you’ve ever wanted to check out Mario Acevedo’s The Nymphos of Rocky Flats, you can now read it for free over at the Eos blog.

SciFiGuy found a new anthology that’s being published in the UK. It’s titled Love Bites and it features: Keri Arthur, Jennifer Ashley, Karen Chance, Dawn Cook, Claire Delacroix, Caitlin Kittredge, Vicki Pettersson, Lilith Saintcrow, Diane Whiteside, Eileen Wilks and more. It sounds like it’s a Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance Vol 2; however, there has been no mention of a US release yet. It’s due out in the UK in August, so we may see it sometime this fall.  SciFiGuy also shared that a new anthology is in the mix.  It’s being edited by Ellen Datlow and will be called Naked City: New Tales of Urban Fantasy.  This is going to be another one of those huge collections (well, huge for an anthology), so if you’re interested in seeing who is all there, check out SciFiGuy’s post where he lists all the stories and authors.

Suburban Vampire has a list up of this years Vampire Events. It’s kind of cool; I didn’t realize there was this much going on in the world and I kind of wish some of them would happen closer to me.

I have stumbled upong some interesting news for Linda Wisdom fans.  The next Hex novel is tentatively titled Hex in High Heels (if you have read the novels, you should be able to guess who this one is about) and is planned for an October release, but there’s nothing concrete yet.

New Anthology Announced! Laurell K. Hamilton, Marjorie Liu, Yasmine Galenorn and Sharon Shinn will all be contributing to an anthology called Never After, which is set to release November 3, 2009.  I can tell you the Galenorn novella will be another Otherworld story, but that’s about it at the moment.

For the next round of new covers, we have two that aren’t all that new, but they were changed.  The cover for JR Ward’s Lover Avenged (April 28, 2009) has a new model as well as some new body art; for Maria Snyder’s Storm Glass (April 28, 2009), the cover was pulled back and we can now see who was holding the orb; Katie MacAlister’s My and My Shadow (October 1, 2009); and a new anthology, Love Bites, featuring Keri Arthur, Jennifer Ashley, Karen Chance, Dawn Cook, Claire Delacroix, Caitlin Kittredge, Vicki Pettersson, Lilith Saintcrow, Diane Whiteside, Eileen Wilks and more (click here for more info).

Carrie Vaughn announced the title of Kitty #7 – Kitty’s House of Horrors.  She’s still working on it, so obviously there isn’t a release date yet, but they are aiming for a January 2010 release.

Here are this month’s reviews:

Catherine Karp has an excerpt up for her work in progress, The Vampire’s Wife.  Feedback from the excerpt will be added to a proposal package that Catherine and her agent are putting together for when they submit the novel to publishers.  So if you want to see the novel in print – go over and leave some love.

The first couple of chapters for Kelley Armstrong’s Frostbitten are up on her site now.  Armstrong’s e-serial officially launched in January and you can read the current chapters up (and comment) over at Chloe Saunder’s LJ page (can you guess which series it belongs to?).  New chapters are added every 2 weeks, so there isn’t too long to wait in between each one.

The sixth World of the Lupi novel will be called Blood Magic.  I can’t remember if I mentioned this last month or not, but there’s an excerpt for it in the back of Mortal Sins, which came out February 3rd.

Ilona Andrews has sold a new series to their publisher.  On the Edge will be released October 2009 and you can check out the concept here.  If you’ve been following Andrew’s blog, they’ve been adding snippets of this novel every so often, so head over and check it out.

There’s new info on Janet Evanovich’s Finger Lickin’ Fifteen, the latest Stephenie Plum novel.  Set to release June 23, 2009, the first chapter is now up for our reading pleasure.  Here’s the blurb found over at Evanovich’s new redesigned site (this isn’t the official cover, but it could be):

While recovering from an ill-timed makeup mishap, Lula is a witness to celebrity chef, Stanley Chipotle, losing his head – literally. Now Lula and Stephanie are on the hunt to identify the killers before Lula is next on the chopping block.

Meantime, Ranger’s recruited Stephanie’s help for a top secret mission. Someone on the inside at Rangeman is leaking client information, determined to bring the company down. No one is above suspicion, not even Ranger’s right hand man, Tank.

Can Stephanie hunt down a killer, a traitor, five skips and keep Grandma out of the sauce?

It’s the sexiest, scariest, most fun Plum yet. So good you’ll want seconds.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
