My Soul to Lose by R. Vincent

RVincent-Soul to LoseFor those of you who have read or are reading Rachel Vincent’s Soul Screamers series, My Soul to Lose was written after My Soul to Take (the 1st book in the series), but it actually takes place before it. My Soul to Lose is a novella that shows you what happened to Kaylee the first time she was unable to hold back on one of her “panic attacks”, as she often refers to them. Having never read the series and coming across the My Soul to Lose novella, I decided to give it a try and found myself hooked on the Soul Screamers series in a matter of minutes.

It was supposed to be a fun day, shopping at the mall with her best friend. Then the panic attack started and Kaylee Cavanaugh finds herself screaming, unable to stop. Her secret fears are exposed and it’s the worst day of her life.

Until she wakes up in the psychiatric unit.

She tries to convince everyone she’s fine–despite the shadows she sees forming around another patient and the urge to scream which comes burbling up again and again. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. Everyone except Lydia, that is. Another patient with some special abilities….

If you’ve never read any of the Soul Screamers series, it’s a story of a girl named Kaylee who can predict death. She has to be standing near the person in order to predict said death, but when it happens, her “panic attack” is not a pretty sight. So much so that it lands her in a mental institution, which is pretty much what My Soul to Lose is about.

In My Soul to Lose, you get very brief introductions to Emma, Aunt Val and Uncle Brendon, but for the most part there a not a lot of characters from the Soul Screamers series in the story. However, she does meet one very interesting girl, Lydia, whom I’m hoping will show up later in the series, though I doubt it. There is definitely more that I’d like to learn about her.

I’m starting to realize that when reading a novella there are some definite benefits. Since they are so short, if the novella is written well then every single page is action packed; that was definitely the case with My Soul to Lose. Even though it was a short read, I was unable to read it in one sitting, but I made a point of taking the time to finish it in one day. Kaylee is a compelling character with just the right amount of compassion, vulnerability, heroine and spunk. She made me laugh, she made me cheer her on and she made my heart break for her. So much so that I turned around and bought My Soul to Take that same day. There was no way I was going to wait to read more about her.

I’m one of those people that loves a good series. I love getting to know the characters in depth and then following through their journeys. So when I read My Soul to Lose I was really excited to find yet another quality series for me to read. The best part is, because it’s so short it’s almost like giving the series a tryout. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on a full blown book just to find out that it’s not for you. Though I’d be shocked to find out that you read it and didn’t love it like I did. Vincent is obviously a very talented writer and I’m excited to continue reading the wonderful Soul Screamers series!
