NA Mini-Challenge: Steampunk

Steampunk Mini ChallengeOne of the beautiful things about the New Author Challenge is it gives everyone a chance to try someone they haven’t before.  Someone they’ve been meaning to or have just recently discovered.  It’s also a great time to finally pick up a novel by someone who keeps being recommended.

With that in mind, for the first mini-challenge of 2011, we’re going to focus on a certain genre that seems to be picking up a lot of steam lately.  I don’t know about anyone else, but Steampunk has been totally making the rounds and what better time to pick up a new novel than right now?  I seriously can’t be the only one who wants to try steampunk, right?

I mean check out all these great titles: Bookman by Lavie Tidhar, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest, The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook, Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, Soulless by Gail Carriger, Steamed by Katie MacAlister, Steampunk by Ann VanderMeer and Jeff VanderMeer, Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, Clockworks and Corsets by Regina Riley and The Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack by Mark Hodder.

So let’s explore this new genre together.  Here are the details for the challenge:

  1. You do not have to be a participant of the New Authors Challenge, but if you’re not, why not?
  2. The Challenge will run from February 1st through the 28th.   All reviews must have an February 2011 date.
  3. The goal is to read up to 5 different steampunk novels.  Write up a review on your blog and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky.
  4. The idea is to try a new author (it is a New Author mini-challenge), so hopefully everyone will be able to find something new.

To add a little incentive for this mini-challenge, each participant will have a chance to win a novel from Literary Escapism’s prize stack.  Here are the contest details:

  1. At the end of the month, I’ll draw one winner from all the reviews posted.  The winner will be announced by March 8th, so you’ll have until March 3rd to get your review into Mr. Linky (remember though, all reviews must have a February date).
  2. Each participant will have 10 chances to get their name in the drawing – 1 entry for each book reviewed (up to 5) and an additional entry for a second place you review said book.  For instance, if you read The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook and review it on your blog and Amazon, you’ll get 2 entries.

If you are trying a new author, make sure you include them in your list for the main New Author.

When adding your link to Mr Linky, please use the following format: your name (title of the book – author).  Whether you want to put your name or your blog name is up to you.  I’ll be closing Mr. Linky at 9pm EST on March 3rd, so make sure all your links are added by then.

Now…who has everyone tried?

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Fab idea for a challenge, I’ve actually got a few Steampunk novels on my to read pile but haven’t read any before so I’ll definitely be siging up for this one :o) I don’t think I’ll manage to read 5 this month though so does it matter if I only read a couple?

  2. I’ve read The Iron Duke, Soulless and Bookman, but I really want to read the Steampunk novellas from Samhain that came out this past November. Mayhaps I finally have a reason to spend all that money!

  3. Awesome. I’ve already done Steamed, the whole Parasol Protectorate, and Clockwork Angel. I’ll have to see what else I can find.

How do we let you know that we reviewed it two places (blog and Goodreads for me)?

  4. Great post and I’m reading up on what SteamPunk is. I’ve heard of it before but as this post has indicated, it’s quickly becoming a bigger genre. Very interesting.

  5. Great challenge! I’m not particiapting, but I will be doing a few series posts on steampunk this summer. I want to add to your list if others are looking or for you to try Vampire Empire: The Greyfriar by Clay and Susan Griffith. It was my first steampunk that got me hooked. The Iron Duke was then my next stop.

  6. I started yesterday the Iron Duke (and im loving it!) but im not sure if i will be able to post the review on time. Anyways, i think this is a wonderful idea and i already participated last year in some of these challenges. I will try to enter to the NA general challenge~

  7. I put my review of The Iron Thorn on goodreads, amazon, barnes and noble, random buzzers and my blog! I think I like this steampunk thing.

    • Not yet. I going to be posting the winners tomorrow. I know I’m running late, but all three of the boys ended up sick last week and getting any time to myself was a challenge. *grin*
