Looks Who’s Going to RT: Kimberly Lang

Kimberly LangCan you introduce yourself to my readers a little?
It might bore them to death, but okay. ~grin~

I’m Kimberly Lang, a USA Today bestselling author of sassy, sizzling romances for Harlequin Presents EXTRA and Mills&Boon RIVA. (As a relatively new author, I never get tired of saying that. It still makes me smile.)

When I’m not at cool places like the RT Booklovers Convention, I’m a wife and mom in a small town outside Huntsville, Alabama, where my husband and I have constant Nerd Wars for control of our child’s heart and mind. (He’s a techie Geek, and I’m a former ballet dancer and English teacher. She’s going to be a nerd; what kind of nerd is still up for grabs, though. When I say my life is an ongoing episode of “When Dilbert Met Frasier,” I’m not kidding. It’s Liberal Arts vs. Science every day around here…)

I love to travel and I’m a bit of a foodie, and, yes, I still take the occasional ballet class.

Can you introduce us to the world that you have created?
I write contemporary romance, so the world is familiar, yet far more perfect and exciting than my real life. In Presents EXTRA, we write cosmopolitan settings, hot alpha males (who have a slightly softer side), and strong, modern heroines who give as good as they get and are real challenges to the hero. I try to give that glamorous aura to my books, but I also like to have them slightly grounded so they still feel realistic.

My current release is Girls’ Guide to Flirting with Danger. It’s a reunion story, set in Chicago, for Megan — a marriage counselor — and her ex-husband, Devin — America’s most famous and popular divorce attorney — so it’s a mix of glam fantasy and fun reality.

Will this be your first RT or are you a veteran? Any advice for those who are going for the first time?
This will be my second time at RT, so I’m probably not the best person to come to for advice. The greatest thing about RT is that you’re surrounded by people who love the same thing you do — romance! — so there’s no problem finding someone to talk to. Someone there remembers and loves that same novel that pulled you into the genre, and you’ll discover books and writers that will become new favorites. For a book nerd like me, it’s quite possibly the happiest place on earth (Sorry, Mickey.)

The piece of advice I will offer first timers is “Don’t be afraid to say hello.” I had great conversations with people in the strangest places — and strange conversations with great people, too!. (And if you ask me, I might tell you how I stalked the wrong person at RT last year…)

Are you speaking on any panels during RT? Are there any you are looking forward to?
I’m doing a panel with Lynn Raye Harris and Kira Sinclair on Thursday called “Walking the Line.” We’re going to be talking about heat levels (and the explicitness) of some of the different Harlequin lines. I’ll also be at the Harlequin Mixer on Thursday and Club RT on Friday morning.

I’m still in the deciding mode for panels I want to attend. There are so many to choose from, and several are at the same time. I may end up with some coin tosses for those. I also try not to schedule myself too rigidly — I accidentally ended up in some excellent workshops last year that I hadn’t planned on attending. Plus, I ended up missing one or two that I had planned on because I met someone and lost track of time while we were chatting.

If someone were wanting to meet up with you at RT, who should they look for?
I wear very impractical, yet very pretty, shoes. If you’re looking for me, I can promise you I’m *not* the one wearing cute flats.

I think I’ll be a redhead this year at RT, but I could decide to be a blonde by then, so that’s not very helpful, is it?

Hm, if last year’s experience is anything to go by, you might want to look for me in the bar area. I tend to gravitate toward places where I can get something to eat *and* hang out with people.

Let me just say that the thought of someone actually looking for *me* — especially when there’s all these other really amazing authors around — just gives me a happy giggle. Please feel free to come say Hi. You’re not interrupting and I’d love to meet you. In fact, it will totally make my day!

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
