Playing with Fire by K. MacAlister

I just got my hands on the new Katie MacAlister novel, Playing with Fire, and I am loving it. Although, it did make me concerned about one thing. The novel is about the silver dragons, more importantly about Gabriel, the silver dragon wyvern. However, Aisling and Drake make several appearances, and this is what is troubling me. Aisling is pregnant (if you haven’t read Holy Smokes, what are you waiting for), and for some reason I am fearing that there isn’t going to be another Aisling Grey novel. Hopefully I’m wrong, but I am getting this feeling.

Anyway, back to the novel at hand. Playing with Fire introduces us to May Northcott, a doppelganger and a demon lord minion, and gives us more background information on Gabriel. We’ve all met him in the Aisling Grey series, but now he’s getting his own story arc. This is obviously a spin-off from Holy Smokes, however, you don’t necessarily have to read it in order to understand what is going on. MacAlister highlights all of the important information within the first quarter of the book, so you’re really not missing much (except for the courtship of Drake and Aisling, which was hilarious).

Playing with Fire is just as much fun as the Grey series, but it gives us a different viewpoint on the world MacAlister has created. We’re given more character development on a well known character as well as a new character that is just as engaging as the rest of the cast. The plot is just as chaotic and filled with twists and turns that make you think you know what is going to happen, but it turns out to be completely unexpected.

Overall, this novel is awesome and I can’t believe I waited as long as I did to read it. I thought I was in a reading funk, but I was so captivated by the story that I was able to finish it within a couple of hours. MacAlister brings all the fun and hilarity of the Grey series to the Silver Dragons, that even though it’s a new series, it doesn’t feel like it. It’s just from a new point of view. The second novel, Up in Smoke, is due out in October and I know I’ll be at the book store on that day to pick it up.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
