Katherine “Kitty” Katt by G. Koch

GKoch-Touched by an Alien

I was going through my draft folder and found this unpublished review of the Katherine “Kitty” Katt series by Gini Koch. Why it was unpublished, I’m not sure, but I’m rectifying that issue now.

GKoch-Touched by an AlienTease me.  Tempt me.  Barrage me with images and I will generally pick up a book.  Especially if I keep hearing how fabulous it is.  Although, that’s not exactly how a certain night started out.  This fabulous Batman boudoir sparked a discussion about superheroes and the use of said room, but then it morphed into images of hot regenerative aliens and elevators.  Needless to say, my curiosity about Gini Koch’s Touched by an Alien was thoroughly piqued and I ended up dropping what I was reading and picking it up.  Twenty-four hours later, I’m jumping onto Barnes & Noble and picking up Alien Tango and preordering Alien in the Family.

How can a sexy marketing manager join forces with an Alpha Centauri male in Armani to save the planet-using hairspray, a Mont Blanc pen, and rock n’ roll?

Easy…She’s Touched by an Alien

Marketing manager Katherine “Kitty” Katt steps into the middle of what appears to be a domestic dispute turned ugly. And it only gets uglier when the man turns into a winged monster, straight out of a grade-Z horror movie, and goes on a killing spree. Though Kitty should probably run away, she springs into action to take the monster down.

In the middle of the chaos a handsome hunk named Jeff Martini appears, sent by the “agency” to perform crowd control. He’s Kitty’s kind of guy, no matter what planet he’s from. And from now on, for Kitty, things are going to be sexy, dangerous, wild, and out of this world.

I’ve never been a fan of science fiction novels, but every so often I come across one that completely surprises me.  I have to give everyone on Twitter last night credit; they were right for tempting me with Koch’s story.  Her Alpha-Centaurions are deliciously amusing and the main heroine, while not necessarily uncommon in any urban fantasy, is far more refreshing than a lot I’ve read recently.  Lately, it’s been taking a really good story to get me to finish any book in just a few days; however Koch manages to not only keep me interested, but does it with just a few pages.  By the end of chapter four, I was trying to convince myself I really didn’t need to sleep and I can function with only a few hours sleep. *grin*

While the main heroine, Katherine “Kitty” Katt, may be a little typical, I have to say the voice of the character was fabulous. She has no problem jumping into the middle of a situation and taking charge, but she does it with such an unusual flair that I loved watching her mind work.  During the fights, she doesn’t go for the convention weapons, but thinks outside of the box and uses anything in her Mary Poppinsesque bag.  Seriously.  Who thinks about taking down a 6ft monster (not counting the wings) with nothing but a very expensive pen?  Not only that, when she was being introduced to the aliens, she doesn’t let them intimidate her even though she’s not exactly sure what is going on.

Added to all this, we have this fabulous Armani-wearing “agent” who is so easy going that he doesn’t come across as the main hero type.  I’m not sure if I’m saying this right, but Jeff Martini has a lot of personality and it totally shows within the story.  Between him and Christopher, I was completely captivated by the Alpha-Centaurions an

My biggest hang up with science fiction is basically the technology.  I have to be able to envision it otherwise I can’t get lost into a story.  Technology is a huge element in any SciFi, so it’s not like you can just write it off; however Koch does an amazing job of making her advanced technology realistic and downright drool worthy.  Unlike some SciFi I’ve come across, Koch’s technology not only seems possible, but a lot closer to actually happening.  I’m not going to say too much more about the technology, mainly because it’s not to hard to comprehend and doesn’t need explaining, but just don’t let it be the reason you’re afraid to pick up this spunky science fiction novel.

It’s been a couple months since I’ve read the last Kitty Katt novel and all I can say is it doesn’t take much for all the characters to spring to my mind. Their personality, their chemistry, the sheer curiosity of what they’re doing – all of it comes to mind and reminds me that I have been a very bad girl in getting behind on this fabulous series. If you’re a romance junkie and looking to dive into the science fiction genre, or simply want a fun science fiction read, then I have to recommend you go out and find Touched by an Alien as well as the subsequent novels. You won’t regret it. Now I need to go unbury Alien Proliferation from within my kindle so I can get caught up with this fantastic series.
