To Kill a Warlock by H.P. Mallory

To say that I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed To Kill a Warlock by HP Mallory, would be a huge understatement! The cover is spunky and unique and I liked it very much.  To Kill a Warlock was an incredibly fantastic read from start to finish. My only issue was that I hadn’t found out about H.P. Mallory sooner! *grins*

The murder of a dark arts warlock. A shape-shifting, ravenous creature on the loose. A devilishly handsome stranger sent to investigate. Sometimes working law enforcement for the Netherworld is a real bitch. Dulcie O’Neil is a fairy. And not the type to frolic in gardens. She’s a Regulator-a law-enforcement agent who monitors the creatures of the Netherworld to keep them from wreaking havoc in the mortal world. When a warlock is murdered and Dulcie was the last person to see him alive, she must uncover the truth before she’s either deported back to the Netherworld, or she becomes the next victim. Enter Knight Vander, a sinfully attractive investigator sent from the Netherworld to work the case with Dulcie. Between battling her attraction to her self-appointed partner, keeping a sadomasochistic demon in check, and fending off the advances of a sexy and powerful vampire, Dulcie’s got her hands full. As the body count increases, Dulcie finds herself battling dark magic, reconnoitering in S&M clubs and suffering the greatest of all betrayals.

In a time where paranormal books are in abundance and everyone is trying to capitalize on whats most popular, it is a nice breath of fresh air to read a book such as To Kill a Warlock. Why? Perhaps its my love of winged creatures and all things fae, but I simply adore when authors break the mold and venture into the different aspects of the paranormal. And that is exactly what Mallory has done with To Kill a Warlock. As a matter of fact, she has many paranormal creatures in this story and that makes me squee even more because I love the variety she brings to the world. I especially loved the little details Mallory adds to her characters to make them unique.

Admittedly, To Kill a Warlock was rather predictable and I knew what was going to happen in the end around halfway through. I really hate when that happens so I was a bit let down by the lack of creativity the plot had. Even though the plot was a little lacking and predictable, the characters were just as spunky as the cover and the world was very interesting. I loved Dulcie as a main character, and the super sexy Vander makes for a great match to her spunkiness.

Overall To Kill a Warlock was a fast and fun urban fantasy read that I really enjoyed, so much so that I purchased the next novel in the series, A Tale of Two Goblins, to find out what happens next!
