NA Mini-Challenge: TBR Newbies

NA Mini-Challenge: TBR NewbiesOne of the beautiful things about the New Author Challenge is it gives everyone a chance to try someone they haven’t before.  Someone they’ve been meaning to or have just recently discovered.  It’s also a great time to finally pick up a novel by someone who keeps being recommended.

In my opinion, recommendations are not only a fabulous thing, but they are probably the bane of any TBR stack.  I mean, I can’t be the only one who walks into a bookstore, sees a book that someone has mentioned or has a catchy cover and then decides to buy it.  At least I hope I’m not the only one.  My own TBR stack is a total victim of that, with titles from Ashlyn Chase (The Werewolf Upstairs), Kasey Mackenzie (Red Hot Fury), Cherie Priest (Bloodshot), Joey W. Hill (The Vampire Queen’s Servant), Diana Rowland (Mark of the Demon) and Jenna Maclaine (Wages of Sin) just sitting pretty, waiting for their turn. I do want to read them, after all I added them to my shelves, but they are totally getting caught up in the too-many-books-too-little-time syndrome.  So that’s going to be the theme for this month’s mini-challenge: to read those novels you bought, with the intention of trying a new author, but haven’t had the chance to yet. I’m sure everyone has some form of a TBR stack sitting around their house, so hopefully this will not only help knock a few titles off the pile, but also introduces you to someone you’ve been meaning to try.

If you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t have a TBR stack or it doesn’t include any new to you authors, then why not?  There are so many authors out there to try, so that’s your goal – try someone new.  After all, this is a mini-challenge for the year long New Authors Challenge.  *grin*  If you need a recommendation…

Here are the pertinent details for the challenge:

  1. You do not have to be a participant of the New Authors Challenge, but if you’re not, why not?
  2. The Challenge will run from April 15th through May 31st.   All reviews must have an April or May 2011 date.
  3. The goal is to read up to read those novels you bought, with the intention of trying a new author, but haven’t had the chance to yet.   Write up a review on your blog and then come back to the official start post and add your link to Mr. Linky.
  4. The idea is to try a new author (it is a New Author mini-challenge), however, if you’ve already read all of the listed authors, you can still participant, but don’t re-read a novel.

To sign up for the TBR Newbie challenge, click here.

To add a little incentive for this mini-challenge, each participant will have a chance to win their choice of Bullet by Laurell K. Hamilton, Hellforged by Nancy Holzner, The Accidental Demon Slayer by Angie Fox, The Darkly Luminous Fight for Persephone Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber or Entangled by Graham Hancock – winner’s choice.  Here are the contest details:

  1. At the end of May, I’ll draw one winner from all the reviews posted.  The winner will be announced the weekend of June 3rd, so you’ll have until then to get your review into Mr. Linky (remember though, all reviews must have an April or May date)
  2. Each participant will have 12 chances to get their name in the drawing – 1 entry for each book reviewed (up to 6) and an additional entry for a second place you review said book.  For instance, if you read The Vampire Queen’s Servant by Joey W. Hill and review it on your blog and Amazon, you’ll get 2 entries.

If you are trying a new author, make sure you include them in your list for the main New Author.

When adding your link to Mr Linky, please use the following format: your name (title of the book – author).  Whether you want to put your name or your blog name is up to you.  I’ll be closing Mr. Linky at 9pm EST on March 3rd, so make sure all your links are added by then.  This Mr. Linky is only for your reviews.  To state your intent to participate, please click here.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. This is such a fantastic idea for a mini-challenge. The books I buy for myself always seem to be the last priority when I’m picking up a new book to read! I’ve added a link to my review of Dead, Undead, or Somewhere In Between (I actually won this copy but it was a book I was planning on buying myself and I’ve been wanting to read it since I won it last year so hopefully it still counts!). I posted my review on goodreads too: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/105335574
