Guest Author Marie Treanor

Marie TreanorI am excited to welcome author Marie Treanor, who has just released the second novel in her exciting Awakened by Blood series, Blood Sin.

Even if you walk in the light, you can dwell in the dark.

Months after her dangerous encounter with vampire overlord Saloman, Scottish academic Elizabeth Silk is still trying to cope with both the demands of her ancestral bloodline—which marks her as a vampire hunter — and the overpowering desire she feels for the immortal she brought back from the grave. But she is not alone in her fascination with Saloman.

When Elizabeth tracks down a distant cousin from America, she learns he possesses an antique sword that has caught the interest of the Grand Master of the American hunters. It is the ancient and mystical sword of Saloman — a treasure of vast occult powers and a prize beyond measure to both vampires and humans. Now the race is on for possession of the sword.

Even as her enemies and allies shift their allegiances and battle for supremacy, Elizabeth must decide which will rule her own perilous fate: unwanted loyalty or unholy love.

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a copy of Blood Sin.

Vampire Escapism

I’ve been asked several times recently why I chose to write about vampires. A cynical answer might be, because they sell – and I’m certainly not sorry to see the vampire cult continue! But the honest answer would be because I like them ?. I always have, ever since I discovered Hammer horror films and Dracula by Bram Stoker. I was only a kid then, and ever since, I’ve followed the growing vampire craze with huge interest, from Interview with the Vampire down to current vampire romances.

For a long time I thought I was alone with my obsession – apart from a couple of similarly inclined friends with whom I once followed in the footsteps of Jonathan Harker through Transylvania. But the more recent explosion of vampire romance has opened my eyes to the fact that vampires have a much wider allure than I once imagined!

So what is it about vampires that attracts so many readers? I’ve been asking around, and it seems there are several characteristics that pull us in: the sheer power of the vampire; the forbidden love aspect; the “bad boy” attraction; and immortality.

In short, vampire romance is the ultimate escapism. The reader not only gets to escape to an exciting world, she gets a hero of superhuman power – to say nothing of his sexual prowess – often with all the charm of a brooding gothic-type hero and a sexual attraction to die for (literally, perhaps!). He takes and offers more sexual pleasure than an ordinary human hero – thinking of the vampire bite here as well! – and that makes the romance bigger than one between mere humans. Then he can protect those he loves from just about everything – and who doesn’t want to be protected? There’s also an element of greater trust: if the heroine consents to be bitten, she’s placing herself in the power of a wild creature more than capable of killing her if he chooses – it’s a massive decision to make.

And most of all there are the tempting possibilities of immortality, and therefore of a love that transcends time and death – the ultimate love story if you like, in a world where death can be cheated. There’s no greater escape than that.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  2. I think vampires are attractive because of their wealth of experience. From a bedroom aspect as well as having had accumulated so many lifetime’s worth of knowledge. They’ve also had enough time to know and be comfortable with exactly who they are (unless they’re the woe is me I’m a monster type- not sexy.)

  3. to be honest, the first vampire I was attracted to was Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) because of his style *g*
but today I find it very interesting to read about their life, where they’ve been, what they’ve done – there are a lot of possibilities and if they have a dark secret or a darker side I can’t resist them…
Marie, I wish you all the best and congrats on your newest release :)

  4. I find the immortality part very interesting. I think that is what truly sets them apart from humans and most other supernaturals. Imagine having centuries worth of experiences and memories (as opposed to decades) making you who you are? No matter how “human” a vampire may seem, having lived for a very long time would automatically set them apart.
