Ooohh…Vampire News

I just discovered this livejournal blog about the HBO series, True Blood, when Vampire Wire posted that HBO is filming an event in Philly called Dracula’s Ball in advance of the TV series based on the Southern Vampire novels.

As part of the promotional campaign for True Blood, HBO is producing two long form documentary-style shows examining the real and mythical aspects of vampires in our culture.

I never realized there was another part to Bram Stoker’s Dracula that was called Dracula’s Guest. Apparently, there is and it has already been made into a movie and is being released on DVD.

When it comes to vampire movies, I like to watch them, but I don’t go seeking them out. I’m not really sure why, especially considering there are some really great ones from the golden era of films. One such movie, Dracula’s Daughter (1936), is being re-released by Universal. I have a feeling I need to start checking out more of the classic horror films, so if you can recommend any (vampire, werewolf, etc), I’ll be grateful.

I found a new online magazine that focuses primarily on horror and the fantasy. The Harrow is managed by Dru Pagliassotti and it seems to be a really great place to find new talent.

The Harrow is an Open Access peer-reviewed online literary magazine devoted to publishing original and complete works of fantasy and horror. Young, new, and amateur writers are especially welcome to submit their work. Writers will participate in a formal review process and work with the editor on any revisions that are requested before acceptance. The Harrow is intended to be a place to begin rather than to end and works to support writers as they develop their careers.

I’m really starting to like this blog, Bitten by Books. Within the first 10 posts, she reviews 2 different books that I have read and loved, plus there are 3 books in my TBR pile. It seems like I have found another place to get book suggestions.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
