Lover Unbound by J.R. Ward

JRWard-Lover UnboundUp until the last book, Lover Revealed, I haven’t been that interested in Vishous.  He has been one of the few characters in the Black Dagger Brotherhood that I was ‘eh’ about.  Yet I finished Lover Unbound in a day (not my normal speed) and have to say it’s my favorite so far.

In Caldwell, New York, war rages between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Now the cold heart pf a cunning predator will be warmed against its will…

Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous, son of the Bloodletter, possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father’s war camp he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time-until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that cannot include her…

One thing I’ve noticed is that the guys seem to be very much the same as the series goes on.  Is that just me?  They have all been hurt somehow, wearing their scars and hearts on their sleeves while pretending not to.  They all seem to have very similar backgrounds even.  And Vishous, although with his special killer hand of doom, isn’t all that more mysterious than Rhage or Zadist when it all comes down to it.  Even with his kinky sexcipades and his parental background (which is a shocker). But I have to say Lover Unbound drew me in anyway.

I think because it was the least corny of all the books so far.  And although I’m a HUGE fan of the world J.R. Ward has created, I’m not a fan of the corny dialog.  There’s only so much I can take.  Lover Unbound is worlds better when it comes to how Vishous talks to Jane, how they interact and how they grow as a couple.  It’s a breath of fresh air and I’m hoping that the rest of the series is just like this book.

Jane and Vishous’ story had more of a pull than I’ve seen in a while in the BDB series.  She’s a human and I was oddly wishing something would happen so she’d get to stay with him, basically from the get go.  Maybe because V was so not digging his upcoming promotion and because he’s been aching and pining for Butch, the cop now Brother who he couldn’t have, I wanted the man to find someone he could love.  I felt sorry for him and his lack of visions.  I felt sorry for him and his panic and hatred over what he was being ordered to do.  I actually felt like a part of the story.

My favorite parts of J.R. Ward’s books are the side stories, you see John Mathew finally transition into a warrior.  I loved reading these scenes, how he handled his world as a pretransition male and how he is starting to adjust to his world all big and hunky.  This is the cool stuff.  This is the behind the scenes glimpses of a world I’m in love with.  And I have to say, it wasn’t near enough and now I’m all WHERE IS JOHN’S BOOK I MUST READ HIS BOOK NOW!!  And before I move on from the side stories, there was hardly any lesser action in this one, it wasn’t missed because there was so much going on with Jane and Vishous but it was a bit odd compared to the other books in the series.

I’m so excited to read the next one in the series it’s redonkulous.

Aren’t most of these “bad boy” handsome vampire characters a bit like that in whatever book you read. They all have their tough act, end up falling in love with a “weak” human. Then it’s usually followed by attracting and repelling the other because that relation can’t happen, till they end up together.

Predictable, but it works and I love it !

  2. Very true Lorre! But I meant that the characters aren’t standing out anymore because they are so similiar. Wrath and Zadist seem to stand out the most, while the others sorta blend together…at least for me ;).
