Harlots

Jeanne Stein has a new cover for her upcoming novel, Retribution, the fifth Anna Strong novel. It’s due to release August 25, 2009.

Remember that article, Where Is Our Radical Youth? by Ron Charles that was published in the Washington Post, that I had mentioned on Friday?  I found a rebuttal over at YPulse arguing why today’s generation is so different than those during the 60s and 70s.  It makes a very good point that pretty much tells the difference between the two times – the internet.

For Weekly Geeks this week, we’re doing a quote a day, so here are today’s words of wisdom from Larissa Ione’s Passion Unleashed.

“Fuck you,” the guy spat / “Guy like me?” Wraith smiled, leaned in so his lips grazed the guys cheek. “You. Wish.” – (p8)

I love the cover for Must Love Hellhounds and one of the authors in the anthology, Nalini Singh, gave us some insight about her included novella, Angels’ Judgment.  The story is going to feature Sara, the director of the Hunters Guild, and we’ll finally get to see how she met Deacon.

The Demon’s Librarian by Lilith Saintcrow has finally been added to Amazon.

Darque Reviews has given herself a new look and a new website. Although, I’m not sure if it’s there to replace her blog or if its going to be more of an archive site.

Check out this cover for The Women of Nell Gwynne’s by Kage Baker. I’m not really familiar with this author, or with steampunk (can someone explain this to me), but I am digging this cover.  It has definitely piqued my interest.  Subterranean Press is selling about 1500 signed limited editions if anyone is interested.  I’m intrigued enough to post the blurb even…

Lady Beatrice was the proper British daughter of a proper British soldier, until tragedy struck and sent her home to walk the streets of early-Victorian London. But Lady Beatrice is no ordinary whore, and is soon recruited to join an underground establishment known as Nell Gwynne’s. Nell Gwynne’s is far more than simply the finest and most exclusive brothel in Whitehall; it is in fact the sister organization to the Gentlemen’s Speculative Society, that 19th-century predecessor to a certain Company…and when a member of the Society goes missing on a peculiar assignment, it’s up to Lady Beatrice and her sister harlots to investigate.

Ilona Andrews now has a forum, so head on over for some great discussions about the Kate Daniels series and other novels.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. Steampunk in literature is generally set in the Victorian period, with the change that technology was more advanced than it was in real life. Mad scientists abound, and gadgets run by steam and gears. Steampunk doesn’t have to be set in Victorian England, but often is, or in the American West (think the tv show “Wild Wild West” and the various gadgets they used). It’s mostly been found in science fiction–authors like Tim Powers, K.W. Jeter, James Blaylock. In comics, “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” is one example, “Girl Genius” is another.

Lately, it’s had a resurgence associated with the popularity of Steampunk costumes both at sf cons and in the wider world–the chief marker is often a pair of fancy brass goggles, and variants on Victorian and/or Edwardian garb. Here is a page of links: http://www.costumes.org/history/100pages/steampunk.htm

In romance/erotica, the closest things I’ve seen so far are Emma Holly’s demon universe and Ginn Hale’s WICKED GENTLEMEN, though apparently others are working in the genre for future publication.
