In the Dead by J. Petersen

JPetersen-In the DeadIt’s not often that zombie themed stories can be funny. Yet Jesse Petersen has created not only a hilarous, but heart-wrenching stories filled with blood thirsty zombies.

When the Zombie Apocalypse began in Seattle and spread within days to almost the entire western half the country, the survivors had to figure out how to deal with the plague and live one day at a time. These are their stories.

Set in the same world as Jesse Petersen’s Living with the Dead series, In the Dead Volume 1 has nine very different stories with all new characters. Each story is just long enough for you to get engrossed, wishing that these people would get away from the zombies.  Then their story ends, sometimes with and sometimes without the happy, bite-free ending everyone deserves.

Out of all nine short stories, my two favorites are Bonewrecker 2, which is about a guy who was playing a video game while the zombie apocalypse happened and he emereged to find reality to be like his video games; and Mr. MacGyver, which is about two sisters who are trying to find their way back to their parents after the breakout.

From zombies crashing a wedding to crazy, twistedly sick zombie inspired reality T.V. shows, In the Dead will have you laughing, cringing and thinking that maybe it is a good idea to start carrying a machete everywhere (you know, just in case the zombies start popping up unexpectedly).
