Chased by Moonlight by N. Gideon

NGideon-Chased by MoonlightI am happy to say I’ve found a new love, Nancy Gideon’s Moonlight series.  I sadly have not read the first book of the series, Masked by Moonlight, but it is now on my to-read list.  I’ve been sitting on her second novel in the series, Chased by Moonlight, for way too long; if I had known I’d like it this much I’d have started reading it the second it was handed to me.

SHE’S SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY.

Mixing business with pleasure gets more complicated for Detective Charlotte Caissie when her sexy preternatural lover, Max Savoie, is accused of a high-profile murder. To prove him innocent she must distance herself, but her tangled emotions don’t make it easy for her to stay away from him. And neither does Max.

HE’S DESPERATE TO UNCOVER HIS PAST.

Left in charge of a criminal empire and protector of a clan of shadowy shape-shifters, Max walks a precarious line. Can he believe the cunning stranger who claims he can teach Max the things he needs to know to stay alive? A con man who would betray anyone to make a profit, who may be a ruthless killer?

TOGETHER, THEY’RE TEMPTING FATE.

The harder Cee Cee fights to clear Max’s name, the more he pushes her away. He’s protecting a dark truth that could blow the top off her investigation. And that means hiding his motives and lying to a woman who values truth above all. The woman who can save him . . . if he’ll let her.

Charlotte is a tough as nails police officer.  Max is an even tougher werewolf.  And they are in love.  Which means she walks the line of following the law and covering his tracks to protect him, and he walks the line of the laws of his people and making her happy.  They continuously make the choice of where their loyalty lies.  But in the end, it’s each other that they choose, no matter what the consequence, because they are desperately in love with one another.

I loved them! I loved how they flirted and joked.  I loved how he was so tender to her and how she didn’t know how to be tender for him.  That she’s never let anyone get close to her due to her past, but she makes the exception for him.  I loved how he needs her toughness more than she knows.  That with his past and his world, he’s in the same position of her being the only one he’s been really close to.  I love that she wears his clothes and he can’t help but want her every time he sees her.  I love how to others he’s a killer and someone to fear but with her he’s gentle and loving and kind and someone entirely different.  I love how smart she is and how she doesn’t let fear rule her and she’s always full of surprises.  I LOVE THEM.

In Chased by Moonlight, you have the murder mystery in the background and the relationship of Max and Charlotte as the main attraction.  That’s not a complaint, although there could have been more excitement on the murder mystery end to bring more spice to their relationship issues.  For all arrows to be pointing to him as the murderer, you have more love time than mystery investigation time.  I’m a romantic, so I love the love haha, but there could have been a little bit more of the murder investigation to kick things up a notch or two.  Other than that, it was a great story with enough intrigue and danger to keep me interested…and ready to go back for more.

I’m really digging the world of shape-shifters that Nancy Gideon has created.  It’s a new take, with old school legends and myths, but it’s not twisted up into some weird mishmash jumble.   There’s a story unraveling behind the scenes of a world I’m now insanely curious about and cannot wait to read the rest of the Moonlight series.
