All You Desire by Kirsten Miller

KMiller-All You DesireI’ll admit, I’m usually pretty wary of reading a book that is part of a series if I haven’t read ALL the books in a series. However, All You Desire, the second novel in Kirsten Miller’s Eternal Ones series, looked very good and tempted me just enough to try it and I was not disappointed.

Haven Moore and Iain Morrow have been living a blissful life in Rome, an ocean way from the Ouroboros Society and its diabolical leader. But paradise is not to last. The mysterious disappearance of Haven’s best friend, Beau, sends the pair running back to New York, where they encounter the Horae, an underground group of women who have spent centuries scheming to destroy Adam Rosier. Only they can help Haven uncover the secret to Beau’s whereabouts in one of her past lives. But their help comes at a price: Haven must infiltrate the Ouroboros Society, charm Adam Rosier, and lure him into a trap. It’s a plan the Horae believe will save the world-but Haven and Iain fear that it may destroy the happiness they’ve been chasing for two thousand years.

I was afraid I might end up being lost with All You Desire, since it is the second in the series and is a continuation of characters and events from The Eternal Ones, the first novel in the series.  However, I felt Ms. Miller did an excellent job of giving information from the previous book so that if you do pick up All You Desire without reading the first, you won’t be lost. Also, that past information didn’t interfere with her story arc, which was nice.

Haven has lived many lives, but she doesn’t really remember most of them.  She gets bits and pieces through visions or dreams.  She has a true soul mate, Iain, but is sought after by what is referred to as a “magos”.  Haven is a strong young lady, determined to try and do the right thing. She’s trying to help her best friend, who coincidentally was also her brother in a former life.  She is not afraid to risk it all, as she feels she owes her BFF all that she can give in order to rescue him.  But, Haven is still young in this life and without knowing all the information she really needs to know from past lives, Haven can be naive at times and makes mistakes.

Iain doesn’t have the memory problem that Haven does.  In fact, apparently he remembers ALL of his past lives clearly.  You’d think he’d be more of a help to Haven.  But, that just isn’t the case.  While he is Haven’s soul mate, apparently he doesn’t always make an appearance in her life or dies before Haven does in some tragic way.  Iain is hot-headed and rash, and seems to make impulse decisions.  Though, you’ll come to find that because Iain has all his memories in tact, he has learned something over the course of all his lives and decisions that you may find impulsive are actually well thought out.

There’s so much going on in this book and giving just information on our hero and heroine doesn’t seem to give the reader a clear picture.  The secondary characters (Beau, Leah, Adam) are just as important.  Beau is Haven’s BFF, former brother, etc and is kidnapped…but by whom and why.  This is what Haven and Iain risk everything to find out.  Leah, well, she’s a friend of all three and becomes very central to the plot towards the end.  You don’t see her much, as she’s off to college at Duke.  Then there’s Adam…the magos.  He is some sort of immortal and likes to create chaos. Though, he admits that even he isn’t sure what he is…but human isn’t it.  Sound familiar? I’m wondering if in future books it won’t be revealed that he is Loki. Seems fitting IMHO.    Also, you’ll meet a Pythia, and Karen Chance fans, don’t worry, this Pythia is nothing like Cassie ;). In fact, the powers of this Pythia aren’t really anything like the ones in Chance’s series, but that doesn’t make her any less important.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and stayed up late to finish it.  I’m debating going back and picking up the first book in the series, The Eternal Ones.  Paranormal mystery and YA fans, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up.
