Lights, Camera…Monsters by L. Dubois

LDubois-Lights Camera MonstersEver read a blurb, think the plot sounds pretty cool, only to end up slightly disappointed because it fell a bit flat? Well, to be honest, that is what Lights, Camera…Monsters by Lila DuBois was for me.

Luke is desperate to save his people. A lifetime of sneaking in to human houses and watching movies has convinced him that if he can make a great movie about monsters, humanity will change its opinion of them. With his friends at his side, all in shiny new human bodies, Luke heads for Tinsel Town.

A rising Hollywood producer, all-business Lena knows a good story when she sees it. Luke? He’s just another amateur who wants to get famous. But Luke’s too gorgeous to pass up. And there’s something vulnerable about him that leads her to throw caution to the wind and invite him to dinner.

One night of incredible sex later, Lena wakes up next to the surprise of her life. She’s sleeping next to a monster. Literally.

Appearances aside, she finds herself wanting to help Luke save his people. But they’ve got more to worry about than just human prejudice.  Some of the monsters would rather stay in the closet—and to make them all stay there, they’re willing to kill.

Maybe I had too high of expectations and this is a “new to me” author, but I had no idea (especially based on that blurb) that this was erotica.  I don’t think you go six full pages without some sort of sex scene…and these scenes can last several pages.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I like me some smex and smexy scenes.  Even on occasion, a good erotic book is just what I’m in the mood for.  But, is it so wrong to expect the book to be classified as such? I went back to look at the spine and it is classified as “paranormal romance”. Um, IMHO I’d classify it as “paranormal erotica”.  It is purely my opinion here, but the two are NOT the same.

The characters were also “meh”.  I didn’t feel like there was that much depth to the hero, Luke, or the heroine, Lena.  It was they met, were attracted to each other, had dinner and fell into bed.  That isn’t to say you don’t learn anything about them, you do. But, they are having sex so much, there isn’t much else going on.  Even the antagonist doesn’t appear (not a peep, nothing) til a few chapters from the end of the book and when you get even a hint of tension there, it’s anti-climatic.

All in all, I was not a fan of Lights, Camera…Monsters. The premise seems like a good idea, and Ms. Dubois’s writing is easy to follow, I just wish there had been more to the story than a lot of sex.  If you’re looking for a good, smutty read (and I’ll be honest, I was not in the frame of mind to read erotica, having had a rough and emotional few weeks lately), then you may want to pick this up.
