The Black & White Cover Contest

While I was digging through the piles of books I have, I came across a collection of Black and White covers that just screamed another color contest.  Again, there’s really no rhyme or reason to this one, so I’m just going to show you what I’m giving away.

Low Town by Daniel Polansky

DPolansky-Low TownDrug dealers, hustlers, brothels, dirty politics, corrupt cops . . . and sorcery. Welcome to Low Town.

In the forgotten back alleys and flophouses that lie in the shadows of Rigus, the finest city of the Thirteen Lands, you will find Low Town. It is an ugly place, and its champion is an ugly man. Disgraced intelligence agent. Forgotten war hero. Independent drug dealer. After a fall from grace five years ago, a man known as the Warden leads a life of crime, addicted to cheap violence and expensive drugs. Every day is a constant hustle to find new customers and protect his turf from low-life competition like Tancred the Harelip and Ling Chi, the enigmatic crime lord of the heathens.

The Warden’s life of drugged iniquity is shaken by his discovery of a murdered child down a dead-end street . . . setting him on a collision course with the life he left behind. As a former agent with Black House—the secret police—he knows better than anyone that murder in Low Town is an everyday thing, the kind of crime that doesn’t get investigated. To protect his home, he will take part in a dangerous game of deception between underworld bosses and the psychotic head of Black House, but the truth is far darker than he imagines. In Low Town, no one can be trusted.

Downpour by Kat Richardson

KRichardson-DownpourHarper Blaine is on the mend, but evil never rests-in the latest novel from the national bestselling author of Labyrinth.

After being shot in the back and dying-again- Greywalker Harper Blaine’s only respite from the chaos is her work. But while conducting a pre-trial investigation in the Olympic Peninsula, she sees a ghostly car accident whose victim insists that he was murdered and that the nearby community of Sunset Lakes is to blame.

Harper soon learns that the icy waters of the lake hide a terrible power, and a host of hellish beings under the thrall of a sinister cabal that will use the darkest of arts to achieve their fiendish ends…

Forgotten by Cat Patrick

CPatrick-ForgottenEach night when 16 year-old London Lane goes to sleep, her whole world disappears. In the morning, all that’s left is a note telling her about a day she can’t remember. The whole scenario doesn’t exactly make high school or dating that hot guy whose name she can’t seem to recall any easier. But when London starts experiencing disturbing visions she can’t make sense of, she realizes it’s time to learn a little more about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

Okay, so maybe calling them all black and white covers is pushing it, but that is seriously what came to my mind when I saw the three sitting together. Did I say three?  I meant to say four.  Yup, I have two lovely copies of Daniel Polansky’s Low Town, so that means we’ll be having four winners this time around.  And this time it’s even easier to enter.  All you have to do is answer this question: What are you currently (have just finished) reading and why should we (or not) read it?  Or, if you’re not reading anything at the  moment, which August release are you anxiously waiting for? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

And that’s it!  I’m getting rid of the additional entries option.  I’ve found a new WP Plug-in that’ll make picking winners really easy and people were saying they like the one option better.  However, this does mean that I will be moderating the comments a little closer than I have in the past.  Any comment that does not answer the question will be deleted and will not count towards the contest (and I will not be notifying anyone if I do disqualify their comment.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the authors in the contest by sharing it on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of these fabulous authors ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The one thing I am not changing is that the winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until midnight on August 15th at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.  I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

  1. Currently I’m rereading the Harry Potter series for the 10th or 11th time. For anyone that hasn’t read it or thinks it is more of a childrens series and won’t it because of that needs to at least give it a shot. It’s not for everyone but it is an extremely well written, entertaining series. Waiting on a few books to be released but I’d have to say I’m eagerly awaiting Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. I absolutely love her different series. Can’t wait to start another one by her.

  2. I just finish Viper Moon by Lee Roland, it was good but reminded me too much of another series (Jennifer Estep’s elemental series)character wise…but I think UF fans would still enjoy it because of the tough/kick @ass heroine. I’m currently reading Shadow Hills by Anastasia Hopcus.

  3. I just finished reading Ernest Cline’s “Ready Player One”, which was an awesome novel filled with gamer-geekery and a load of nostalgia for anybody who considers themselves a geek and who can remember the 1980s and 1990s. It was fun, fast-paced, and a really enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.

  4. I just finished reading Forgotten by Cat Patrick and it is one that I definitely recommend. It had everything I look for in a book. Suspense, romance, mystery just to name a few. I’m really looking forward to reading Between by Jessica Warman and I’ve read some really good reviews so far.

  5. I just finished reading “The Devil Colony” by James Rollins. It is from a series of books he writes about the Simga group. This book can be read seperately from the others. Since I am Canadian, I find American history very interesting. This takes place in the present day but talks about the Founding Fathers of America and their relationship with Native Americans. A lot mystery and adventure in this book. Once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down.

  6. Currently I’m reading Mischief in Mudbug, the second book in Jana Deleon’s Mudbug series. They are a cross between paranormal romance and mystery. I like her writting style and characters.

  7. I just finished reading Nightwalker by Heather Graham. It is a great book that has a little bit of everything, some mystery, love, ghosts, and gambling.

  8. I just finished Ghost Story by Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files #13). It was awesome! Fans of the series won’t be disappointed. Anyone who enjoys urban fantasy would love The Dresden Files for its exceptional plotting, loveable characters, and wry humor.

  9. I just finished Kitty’s Big Trouble which was a lot of fun – always enjoy time with Kitty, Ben and Cormac! Just starting Heartless by Gail Carriger now – only read the first couple of pages but it’s already had me smiling. :)

  10. Ha! I just finished Downpour! This is one of my favorite UF series. It is what I would call hardcore UF. It is about Harper and the Grey. Romance really isn’t part of the series, well…there is a little in this one ;) Would love to read Forgotten. I like the sound of it. Thanks!

  11. I’m reading a few different things, I just finished Living Dead in Dallas, I enjoyed this book’s humor and would recommend it.

I’m reading Lure of the Vampire by Bertina Varney, this is a really informative book, and has lots of interesting information about Vampires, as well as information on websites and essays that were written for this book. So far I love it.

How to Date a Werewolf by Rose Pressey. This is a book I’m enjoying as well I haven’t read to much of it yet, but its really good so far. the Humor is nice too. :)

I just started reading The Surgeon by Tess Garrison. I love the Rizzoli and Isles TV show and this is when everything starts with them in the books, but I’m only on like page 3 so far, so I can’t recommend it or anything yet.

What are you currently (have just finished) reading and why should we (or not) read it? Or, if you’re not reading anything at the moment, which August release are you anxiously waiting for?

  12. just finished a mystery, now about to read JD Robbs newest..
im looking forward to Jayne Castles’ Canyons of Night and Thea Harrison’s Storms Heart (the bookstore didnt have it when i went!)the most.. those are definate buys!
i would LOVE to get downpour! but any of them really! thank you for the contest

  13. Chasing the Moon by A. Lee Martinez is my current novel. Martinez has written a series of fantasy novels with no two a like. His themes are pretty unique. All are quirky and off beat. Very well written.

  14. Currently I’m reading Pride by Rachel Vincent and wow! I read Book#1 Stary last week and instantly became addicted, gobbled up book #2 Rogue yesterday and couldn’t resist starting book#3 right away (how lucky that I have bought all 6 books so now I have them on my shelf at home).

I started reading Book #1 while I was away on vacation, and it was pure torture when I finsihed and didn’t ahve book #2 with me!

Urban fantasy is my favourite genre and Rachel Vincent does it brilliantly! She mixes the perfect ingredients (wonderful and interesting characters, breakneck action, heartclutching romance, chuckle out loud humour and brilliant writing) and the result is fantastic! I immediately fell for the series and book #2 was just as fantastic. I’m in the middle of Pride right now and loving it just as much :-) Rachel Vincent’s writing is wonbderful, flows so naturally that before I realize it I’m already 2-300 pages into the story.

Forgotten has been on my wishlist for some time now, would love to read it! :-)

    Thank you!

  18. Storm’s Heart is what I have in hand right now.
I totally cannot wait for Downpour. Ohh I want that one, the series just keeps getting better with each book! Those hardcovers take a chink out of my shelves but they are sooo fabulous!

  19. I just finished reading Awakenings (Tor Books, Aug. 30, 2011) by Edward Lazellari. It’s the first in the Warriors of Aandor and a debut. I loved it. It’s a terrific Urban Fantasy. I can’t wait for the next book! The cover would fit your contest. It’s mostly black and white and done by Chris McGrath (my favorite cover artist).

I’m just starting The Armadgeddon Chord by Jeremy Wagner. No thoughts on that yet.

  20. I just finished reading Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong. Can’t recommend it enough if you’re already into her Otherworld books. Not a good one to break into the series with, though, so start with an earlier book. :) It’s perfect for readers who love the characters and who want a fast-paced story with lots of plot development.

  21. I just finished Sherrilyn Kenyon’s latest entry to her Dark Hunter lexicon, Retribution. She’s started on a new pantheon/mythology – American Indian. A lot of people have really loved it, but I found it…just OK. Same basic story, different dark-hunter, differences in the details. (Don’t get me wrong, I still love the DH series.) The best part of the book was Bonus Scene at the end of the book – with the birth of Tory & Acheron’s baby :-)

I’m anxiously(?) waiting 3 new releases due the end of August:
    1) Richelle Mead’s Bloodlines
    2) Rachel Vincent’s Bloodbound
    3) Jeaniene Frost’s One Grave at a Time

  22. I’m not currently reading anything at the moment *gasp* I am really looking forward to Bloodlines by Richelle Mead. I read all the Vampire Academy books and I absolutely loved them. I think I bought the first 3 books together and left me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next books. I told my sister to read them and she almost threw the book in the mud b/c she was so mad that she had to wait so long for the next book. I know that Bloodlines won’t have the same narrator and the main characters will be a different, but the whole Vampire Academy, Dhampirs and Strigoi and vampires will still be there. Mead’s writing flows so well too. I cannot wait to get my hands on Bloodlines!

  23. Reading Hybrid by Brian O’Grady. It was a free Kindle download. Not sure if I can recommend it yet or not. Just starting reading it. Its about avirus that was engineered for genocide that gets released in Colorado that causes unexplained violence. There’s a heroine that seems to be immune.

I’m looking forward to Jeanienne Frost’s One Grave at a Time. I love, love Cat and Bones!!! My favorite series because they kick butt, love greatly, and have normal lovers spats. Plus who can pass on an awesome story with Clad involved. Rawr!!!

  24. I just finished Sweetheart by Chelsea Cain and it was really good….if you like serial killer books and messed up cops. It’s the 2nd book in a series and I look forward to reading the rest of them. It’s paced well, good character development…I’m glad I tried it!
