The Sort of Blue Cover Contest

Well, I was going to post the signed edition contest and save this one for next time, but it decided to crash, so let’s talk Fantasy!

Against All Things Ending by Stephen R. Donaldson

SDonaldson-Against All Things EndingThomas Covenant, his wife Linden Avery, and Linden’s son Jeremiah have been reunited after dire trials, including escape from an underground cavern that cost the lives of more than one of their band. In this fast-paced third volume of the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Linden and Covenent make significant progress in fighting back the baleful influence of Lord Foul.

Jeremiah, whose mind has been controlled by the Dark Lord since he was stolen away from his mother’s house and taken to The Land, will be freed, and his importance revealed. Covenant will rouse himself to take action against one of the prime manipulators of all the evil brought against him. And Linden, whose determination got them this far, will finally begin to see some results, and a glimmer of hope, after the epic struggle she has been through. All of these things are a great satisfaction to readers who have followed these characters and feared for them more than once.

Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb

RHobb-Dragon HavenWith their survival at stake, fifteen dragons have set off on a dangerous trek into the unknown, up the Rain Wild River, in hopes of rediscovering the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra, the lost haven for dragons and Elderlings alike. The dragons are accompanied by a disparate group of human keepers, rejects from Rain Wild society.  No map exists to guide them, and the noble creatures find their ancient recollections of little use in a land changed by generations of flooding and seismic chaos.

As the dragons, the humans—including the strong and defiant Rain Wild girl Thymara; the wealthy dragon scholar and Trader’s wife, Alise; and her companion, the urbane Sedric—and their magical supply barge, captained by the gruff Leftrin, forge their way ever deeper into uncharted wilderness, human and beast alike discover they are changing in mysterious and dangerous ways. While the bonds between them solidify, starvation, flashfloods, and predators will imperil them all. But dragons and humans soon learn that the most savage threats come from within their own company . . . and not all of them may survive.

Legacy of Kings by CS Friedman

CSFriedman-Legacy of KingsThe young peasant woman Kamala has proven strong and determined enough to claim the most powerful Magister sorcery for herself-but now the Magisters hunt her for killing one of their own. Her only hope of survival lies in the northern Protectorates, where spells are warped by a curse called the Wrath that even the Magisters fear. Originally intended to protect the lands of men from creatures known only as souleaters, the Wrath appears to be weakening-and the threat of this ancient enemy is once more falling across the land.

There is now an official giveaway policy, so if there’s any question, please consult that.  However, all of LE’s contests have gotten simpler.  All you have to do is answer this question: What are you currently (have just finished) reading and why should we (or not) read it?  Or, if you’re not reading anything at the  moment, is there a book that has popped into your head that you haven’t read lately? (I’ve been thinking about Hannah Howell’s Amber Flame (aka His Bonnie Bride) lately.  Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered.

And that’s it!  I’m getting rid of the additional entries option.  I’ve found a new WP Plug-in that’ll make picking winners really easy and people were saying they liked the one option better.  However, this does mean that I will be moderating the comments a little closer than I have in the past.  Any comment that does not answer the question will be deleted and will not count towards the contest (and I will not be notifying anyone if I do disqualify their comment.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the authors in the contest by sharing it on your blog, Twitter, Facebook or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of these fabulous authors ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The one thing I am not changing is that the winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until midnight on August 31st at which time I’ll determine the winners with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.  I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  3. I just finished The Girl in the Steel Corset. It’s the first steampunk book that I’ve read and really enjoyed. I liked the characters and the story moved.

  6. I have just finished Patrick Rothfuss’ The Name of the Wind and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It was completely different from the epic fantasy I have been reading lately ( Steven Erikson, Glen Cook, George RR Martin, etc) and made for a very nice change.

I have added his other books to my wishlist.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  7. I am reading a treasured copy of Red Adam’s Lady. My son wanted to know why I keep the book in a plastic bag! It’s in fairly good condition and I want to keep it that way.

  8. I’m currently reading Stacia Kane’s Unholy Magic and it’s really good so far. The vivid characters and world she has created are really engrossing. Although I still can’t figure out why Chess doesn’t talk more like the Downside residents. I’m thinking maybe she used to but after being educated by the Church she speaks ‘normal’ now. Oh, and that’s another thing- The Church is a really fascinating concept- there really isn’t religion anymore, just the nearly unchallenged authority (The Church) that regulates all.

  9. I just finished reading the Lure of the Vampire by Bertina Varney. Loved this book, very informative and I learned quite a bit about the vampire Genre I didn’t know. I really enjoyed learning also about lots of books that are out there that have vampires in there from Authors I haven’t ever heard of!

  10. I just finished Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. At first I didn’t really liked the story of the book but in the end I loved it. It has great character and Maggie Stiefvater writes very nice. I’m going to start the second book now.
Thank you for the great giveaway!

  11. I’m currently reading In Winter’s Shadow by Gillian Bradshaw. I just started it but if you like things from the King Author time period you will probably like it. Its part of a series. The third book but its not released yet. I think it comes out in October.

  12. Last night at midnight I finished the ARC of Tempted by Elisabeth Naughton. If people like Greek Mythology, the ARgonauts, hunky men, kick ass attitude, then this is the romance book for them.

Right now I’m in the dilhemma of reading Blood Magic by Jennifer Lyon (I put it to the side so I could read the ARC to review for the author) or Caridad Pineiro’s The Lost. Both are for my own pleasure but I’ve been wanting Pineiro’s book for some time.

  13. I just picked up Carol Berg’s Soul Mirror (Collegia Magica #2) and I’m still in the meet-the-characters chapters. It looks like it’ll be as good as the first (The Spirit Lens), which I enjoyed quite a bit.

  14. Forgot to include the reason to pick it up: Carol Berg writes characters that are flawed in some way yet manage to triumph. In Soul Mirror, Anne has no magic, yet she’s determined to investigate her mage sister’s death. Plenty (so far) of court intrigue and death. And, of course, Anne’s irrepressible short-tempered-ness. :)

  15. I’m currently reading The Burning Stone by Kate Elliott. It’s a third book in a seven book series, but I really love it already. I think the genre could be described as fantasy, but the books are so well written that they seem like historical novels. I’ll recommend them to anyone who like unusual novels about court intrigues, battles, love, with a good portion of religion, and a bit of magic too.
