Black Night by Christina Henry

CHenry-Black NightAfter finishing Black Wings, I had to go ahead and pick up Black Night by Christina Henry.  There was so much to this world that I still wanted to know and I wanted to see how our heroine, Maddy, was dealing with all the new abilities, heritage, etc she had learned about when we met her in Black Wings.  And course, you do…and I think Maddy is gonna be one of those heroines who can’t keep herself out of trouble, as it seems to literally follow her everywhere.

Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her…

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy’s being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves-her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer’s granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

Black Night is the second installment in Henry’s Black Wings series and is even more action packed than the first book (Black Wings). Almost immediately there is trouble…Maddy is on her way back home from doing her Agent duties and bam! her powers disappear and she almost falls to her death (she’s flying home).  So, the group (Gabriel, Beezle and Maddy) have to figure out what is going on.  After all, the only other time this happened was when Ramuell (the big baddie from Black Wings) was coming through portals and Maddy has already killed him.  Black Night has more at stake this time around, too. For as the story continues, Gabriel is kidnapped, as is Beezle, but Maddy locates Beezle fairly quickly and that leads to finding out what else is going on.  On top of trying to figure out who took Gabriel and why her powers fail, Maddy is being sent into Faerie as a negotiator on the behalf of her grandfather, Lucifer.  As if that isn’t enough, there is something killing werewolves from the local pack and Maddy is being framed. At least the pack Alpha seems to believe in Maddy’s innocence, even if his second doesn’t.  Oh, then there’s the little problem of finally meeting her father and being told she will marry this angel that dear ol’ dad has picked out for her…talk about oil and water.  Nathaniel is your stereotypical chauvinistic, snobby (as in I’m better than you, and treats Maddy as such) male.  .  Heh, yeah, guess how much Maddy is on board with that idea. *wink*.

Like I said, trouble literally seems to stalk Maddy.  Maddy is pretty headstrong and sometimes opens her mouth when she shouldn’t, so you can guess what that gets her into while dealing with the Faerie Queen, Amarantha. Amarantha really is a selfish wench and Maddy calls her out big time.  In the end, Maddy prevails, and may just save the world as she knows it.

Black Night was a fun read. Pacing was pretty even and there was mystery after mystery that must be solved, but yet all intertwined. Henry does a good job keeping the plot threads loose and separate and then tying them all up at the very end.  While there’s not a huge cliffhanger at the end, the last few lines definately have me wanting the next book in this fresh UF series.  Now, if only I knew when the release date was *G*…

I have 2 dogs, both Labrador retriever mixed breeds, who are very rotten and think they run the house. Let's not lie, they totally do, I just can't them know it ha ha! My usual genre is romance or urban fantasy. I love all things having to do with paranormal, with the occasional good contemp/BDSM/erotica thrown in to spice it all up.
