Viper Moon by Lee Roland

LRoland-Viper MoonI’m a huge fan of strong lead women in a book.  Nothing ticks me off more than a woman who can’t function without a man to help her (or at least thinks she can’t).  I’m excited to say that Viper Moon by Lee Roland did not disappoint in this regard or in any other regard, for that matter.

Cassandra Archer is the Huntress. She has faithfully served the Earth Mother for years, rescuing kidnapped children from monsters-both human and supernatural-dwelling in the ruins of the Barrows District. But when two children are kidnapped under similar circumstances, all clues point to a cataclysmic event on the next dark moon. Now Cass must race against the clock and prevent a sacrifice that could destroy the entire town…

Cassandra Archer, is a unique and wonderful character.  She’s the Huntress, chosen by the Earth Mother at a very young age, to serve her.  I don’t want to give anything away, so let’s just say that she is incredibly strong and brave, but also has a wonderful sensitive side too.  She is easy to like and draws you in from the moment you meet her.

Cassandra doesn’t have many friends, her “job” as a Huntress makes it too hard for her to keep them.  She has also learned, over the years, to not trust men, so this leaves her with a very small list of people she is close to.  In fact, that list consists of one person and her name is Abby.  Abby is a psychic who serves the Earth Mother by taking care of Cassandra.  Her ability to see the future and heal, are a great deal of help when Cassandra has a mission.  However, their relationship goes so much deeper than that.  It’s almost like a mother/daughter relationship.  Their love and respect for each other is apparent.  Abby has always been there for Cassandra to help and guide her and because of that, they are very close.

Then there’s Flynn.  Detective and brother to the little girl Cassandra has been tasked to find.  He insists on tagging along on her mission, which complicates things for Cassandra in every way; especially because of their strong attraction to each other.  Watching their relationship unfold was something I definitely loved about this book.  I loved how Cassandra’s feelings for Flynn changed her in many good ways, but yet she still didn’t lose her toughness.

The last relationship that was most prevalent in Viper Moon was the one Cassandra had with an acquaintance named Michael.  I say acquaintance, because it’s hard to describe exactly what they are to each other, but none-the-less it’s fascinating to read about these two’s interactions.  Michael has the unique ability to charm everyone, except for Cassandra, which drives him nuts.  He cares for her deeply, but Cassandra is unsure if she can trust him.  Over the course of the book things grow and change between these two, which makes for an interesting read.  There is a lot of mystery surrounding this relationship and I, for one, loved it.

I honestly can’t speak highly enough of Viper Moon.  Roland grabs a hold of the reader from the very first page and doesn’t let go until the very last.  From an extremely scary gang called the Bastinados, to a dark and cursed city called the Barrows, to monsters that live in the sewers and roam the Barrows at night; Roland makes it impossible for the reader to get bored.   I look forward to seeing where he goes next with the Dark Huntress series!
