Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep

JEstep-Kiss of FrostJennifer Estep has done it again! Kiss of Frost was another amazing, kick-ass story that has only left me desperately awaiting its sequel.

I’m Gwen Frost, a second-year warrior-in-training at Mythos Academy, and I have no idea how I’m going to survive the rest of the semester. One day, I’m getting schooled in swordplay by the guy who broke my heart—the drop-dead gorgeous Logan who slays me every time. Then, an invisible archer in the Library of Antiquities decides to use me for target practice. And now, I find out that someone at the academy is really a Reaper bad guy who wants me dead. I’m afraid if I don’t learn how to live by the sword—with Logan’s help—I just might die by the sword…

The first sentence of Kiss of Frost made me insanely giddy: “Logan Quinn was trying to kill me.” Normally I wouldn’t be giddy over Gwen facing death, but it’s Logan freaking Quinn and I have a bigger fan-girl crush on him than Gwen does. Plus, he wasn’t actually trying to hurt Gwen, just teach her how to defend herself.

The rest of Kiss of Frost was much like that first sentence: lots of action and lots of Logan. There was some teenage angst sprinkled throughout the story, but not nearly enough for it to get annoying. Of course, there was also the Reaper who kept trying to murder Gwen and she, in turn, tried to figure out who the Reaper was. Between all of that, the plot literally flew by and I finished Kiss of Frost long before I wanted it to end.

I absolutely adore Gwen. She’s quiet, has the biggest sweet tooth ever and is kind of nerdy. While she does need to work on her hand/eye coordination, she’s not afraid to try and kick-butt when the time comes. (Though she needs work on her sleuthing skills.)

One of the best things about Jennifer Estep’s novels is that the secondary characters are just as amazing as the main characters. Daphne, Gwen’s best friend, didn’t get as big of a role as she did in Touch of Frost, which was disappointing. She’s such an interesting character, a unique blend of preppy, nerdy and strong warrior. Although she never ditched Gwen, Daphne spent more time making googly eyes at her boyfriend than helping Gwen figure out who the Reaper is.

With it’s fast plot, amazing characters and Logan freaking Quinn, Kiss of Frost was simply put, amazing. And I am dying to get my hands on Dark Frost.
