Moon Called (Vol 1) by Patricia Briggs

PBriggs-Moon CalledI love the fact that a lot of my favorite novels are getting turned into graphic novels. The latest one I’ve been able to get my hands on is Patricia Brigg’s Moon Called Volume 1 and I want to see more before I make up my mine.

Five Mercy Thompson novels have topped the New York Times best-seller list, and her premiere graphic novel did the same. Now Patricia Briggs’ heroic shape-shifter returns to comics! Mercy Thompson inhabits two worlds without truly belonging to either. To the human inhabitants of the Tri-Cities she’s an oddity, a female mechanic operating her own garage. To the town’s darker residents, werewolves, vampires, and fae, she’s a walker, a last-of-her-kind magical being with the power to become a coyote. Mercy warily straddles the fine line dividing our everyday world from that darker dimension… ’till a boy, mauled by vicious werewolves and forever changed by the attack and on the run from those who committed the crime, appears at her door. Now her two worlds are about to collide! Outnumbered and out-muscled, can Mercy possibly save the boy… or even herself?

First off, I really like the way the artist has drawn Mercy. She doesn’t have the tattoos the book covers tend to give her and she definitely has that natural beauty.  However, I’m not digging the how they drew Adam. When he first appears on the page, he looks more like a sleazy Italian and that’s not who he is.  When Samuel first shows up, he definitely comes off as the blond hottie that he is and he should not be showing up Adam.  However, I’m willing to see wait and see how Adam is drawn in Volume 2 because his ending appearance gives me a little hope.

As for the storyline, from what I remember, Moon Called Vol 1 is following the original story pretty well.  It’s been awhile since I’ve read Moon Called,  but the graphic is bringing back a lot of what I had forgotten.  I actually can’t wait until Moon Called Volume 2 comes out October 18th so I can continue reliving how Adam and Mercy first started getting together.  It may have taken them a few books, but the beginning of their relationship has always been one I’ve loved.  Plus, we haven’t seen Stefan yet and I really want to see how they are going to represent the vampires.

I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
