Grave Sight (Vol 1) by Charlaine Harris

CHarris-Grave Sight Vol 1I’m a huge fan of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series, but I have yet to try her Harper Connelly series.  I’ve heard good things about the series, but the premise never really intrigued me enough to pick up the first novel.  When I found Grave Sight: Book 1, the graphic novel version, at Borders, I figured why not give it a try.

Acclaimed New York Times Bestselling author Charlaine Harris, the writer of the Sookie Stackhouse series, has joined the Dynamite Entertainment family with the first book of her hit Harper Connelly series, Grave Sight. For the past five years, readers have been thrilled by the Harper Connelly series which follows a woman who has what you might call a strange job: she finds dead people. She can sense the final location of a person who’s passed, and share their very last moment. The way Harper sees it, she’s providing a service to the dead while bringing some closure to the living – but she’s used to most people treating her like a blood-sucking leech. Traveling with her step-brother, Tolliver, as manager and sometime-bodyguard, she’s become an expert at getting in, getting paid, and getting out fast. Because for the living it’s always urgent – even if the dead can wait forever. At the age of 15, Harper Connelly was struck by lightning, an event that gave her the ability to find the dead and see how they died. Since then, Harper’s scratched out a living selling her services to anyone with a checkbook. It’s not the best life, but it beats the alternative – at least until Harper and her brother Tolliver roll into Sarne, Arkansas and find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery!

At first glance, I’m not really finding a lot to get me interested in the series. Like I said, I haven’t read Grave Sight, so I’m not sure what the story is suppose to be like, but I’m not seeing anything that gives me a clue as to what is going on.  All I know is that Harper and her brother Tolliver (who is quite the hottie actually) are going around finding dead bodies and telling the local sheriff how they died.  The part I’m unsure of is why we’re shown a scene of people throwing rocks at Harper and then Tolliver getting arrested, but we don’t know what is going on before that or after.  It’s a single page (or was it two) of that scene and that’s it.  Maybe it’s better explained in the novel, but it really doesn’t give a great start to the graphic novel.

This first volume of Grave Sight is kind of scattered, in my opinion.  Harper is finding bodies and answering questions, but we’re really not given much as to what is drawing her in.  Okay, so maybe that isn’t completely accurate, we do know that she keeps getting brought back to this town of Sarne, but that’s it.  We’re given one clue as to who the villain might be, but there’s nothing indicating why he might be the villain.

I guess what I’m getting at is there really is nothing in this first issue of Grave Sight that is making me go out and find the second volume.  Fans of the series may love what is going on in these first pages and may actually know what is going on.  For someone new to the series, I’m not really finding anything that is making me sit up and notice.
