Drink Deep by Chloe Neill

CNeill-Drink DeepAfter Hard Bitten, Chloe Neill said to faith and with Drink Deep she proves that faith is not misplaced.  However, I wouldn’t say she’s exactly nice to Merit and continues to throw her world into chaos.

Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and Merit the vampire can’t tell if this is the darkness before the dawn, or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times have never been more precarious for the vampires. If only they could lay low for a bit…

Then magic rears its ugly head when Lake Michigan turns black. The mayor insists it’s nothing to worry about, but Merit knows a panic is coming. She’ll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who’s behind this, and stop them before it’s too late for both the vampires and humans.

After the horrifying ending to Hard Bitten, I know I wasn’t the only one bemoaning what Neill did to one of our favorite characters.  I mean, how many authors do that to a major character so soon in the series.  However, while I’m happy to say that my faith in her was right, I am still convince that she’s an evil genius. Life for the supernaturals in Chicago is not going to be easy after Drink Deep and we really don’t get into those politics – everything is simply set up for later.  There are some major changes both in the political structure and with the vampires themselves that nothing is going to be the same for the Cadogen vampires.  But the biggest change is going to occur to Merit and what she has already gone through will be nothing compared to the heartache she’s going to go through.  You may not believe it, and I’m not going to tell you what it is because it’s a serious spoiler, but while losing a boyfriend (or a semi/soon to be boyfriend) is pretty bad, there is something worse you can lose and Neill totally makes Merit lose it.  Whether it’s gone for good won’t be decided until later, but I can tell you that the wait for Biting Cold is going to be another long one.

So let’s talk about the things I can say.  The plot is good.  The conflict I mean. It gives Merit the excuse to meet a few new supernaturals including the Fae Queen and there’s enough action to keep the story flowing.  The solution isn’t immediately obvious, and while I will admit to having a clue as to what was causing it, I didn’t catch on to the reasoning behind it.  That was kind of a surprise.  I won’t tell you who the villain is, but let’s just say you may not expect this person to be the villain.

Speaking of villains, we get to learn quite a bit about our favorite ex-mayor.  The mystery that is Seth Tate isn’t answered, but we’re given a few more clues to who he could possibly be and we now know he doesn’t associate with any one “type”. That’s the only spoiler you’re going to get from me. I’m not going to say anything else, because quite honestly I would love to but there would be some major spoilers. So if I’m going to leave you with anything, it’ll be this – you won’t be disappointed with Drink Deep.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
