Once Upon Stilettos by S. Swendson

I was looking for something light today, so I picked up the second Katie Chandler novel by Shanna Swendson. Once Upon Stilettos brings us back into the fold at MSI, Inc and we pick up pretty much soon after Enchanted, Inc. This time around, it’s not just a competitor that is giving them problems; there is someone within MSI working for the competition. However, this time, there is a definite feel of it being personal, especially when they target Katie. They know magic doesn’t affect her, but they’ve found a way around that pesky problem and now Katie doesn’t know what’s she’s going to do now that she can see all the magic.

I have to say, I’m really enjoying this series. It’s a fun mystery that involves all kind of fun paranormal characters, but isn’t as dark or twisty as some paranormal novels can get. From the security staff that are actually gargoyles to the random gnome, fairy, or wizard popping up out the blue, there never seems to be a dull moment. The odd relationship between Katie and Owen gets a lot more interesting, especially when we throw Rod in with all of his illusionist glory.

Overall, I’m still caught on this series and I’m really contemplating adding it to my personal library. I think I’m going to have to start looking for them at the used book store I found. I know the third novel is available at the library so I’m going to run up there tomorrow night to get it. If I had to compare this series to something, I would probably chose Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series, yet the plots are not as complex or dangerous.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.
