Alterant by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love

SKenyon-AlterantWhen I finished Blood Trinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love, I was sooo glad I had Alterant (the 2nd novel in their Belador series) in my hands because I had to know what was going to happen to Evalle. Alterant is just as fantastic and action packed as Blood Trinity. If you’re looking for a good UF series, look no further.

On the heels of saving mankind from destruction at the hands of the Medb coven, Evalle attempts to convince the Tribunal that she is an Alterant who can be trusted around humans. But the gods and goddess ruling over this Tribunal twist words she’d uttered in the heat of combat and hold her responsible for three dangerous Alterants that escaped their prisons. She is given a choice to either recapture those three who will lose their freedom forever or face the same sentence. Unsure that she can condemn another Alterant to a life she’d die before accepting, Evalle takes on an impossible task only to learn that the entire future of the Beladors rides on her success—and the only person who can help her is the one who wants to gut her.

Alterant picks up right where the events in Blood Trinity leaves off.  I didn’t realize what a big cliffhanger that ending was because I had Alterant at the ready and could read straight on.  But, after seeing there was nearly a year between releases, I was soooo grateful LOL!   Evalle is in serious trouble with the Tribunal…3 gods…who are to decide Evalle’s fate as a free Alterant or if she is to be caged like the rest of her “kind”.  The three gods are Pele, Loki (yep…you know it will be interesting with him around *snort*) and Ares.  Can we say hodgepodge?  Fortunately for Evalle, Loki and Ares hate one another, so Loki somewhat agrees to a plan Evalle proposes, mostly because Ares HATED the idea, but hey a chance is a chance.  However, the Tribunal make some modifications and grant her some gifts; but those modifications cut her off from the people she trusts the most and who would be very helpful in her mission.

Evalle is still our kick butt heroine we meet in Blood Trinity. She doesn’t let the modifications the gods placed on her effect her determination to do what is right and fair (well, in her opinion).  She faces obstacle after obstacle but she never backs down.  She has grown in Alterant and doesn’t always rush head long into danger without thinking.  Even though she is on a huge time crunch, she takes the time (usually a couple minutes) to think things over and comes up with a plan that is reasonable given the situation.

Readers will also see all the secondary characters….Storm, Tzader, Quinn, Isak, etc., Tristan is a major player this time around.  I’m still trying to figure out if there will be a romance subplot develop or not.  Storm is definitely a contender IMHO and I can’t quite figure out if Isak and/or Tristan may come into the mix.  Both seem to care about Evalle and Isak has definitely shown interest on a romantic front.  I can’t quite figure Tristan out, even after basically a book and a half.  He definitely has his own agenda and only helps others when it helps him in some way.  He seems genuinely interested in making sure the Alterants are safe and free from undue persecution, but I don’t know, I still don’t really trust him.  Maybe that is because we don’t know him all that well.

Alterant has some major subplots going on and most don’t get resolved. Of course, the main story arc isn’t resolved either. The pace stays pretty steady throughout the book and with most of the world building complete, there is more action than what you see in Blood Trinity. I can’t wait for the third book to come out. Alterant definitely ends on a cliffhanger and I’m hoping there won’t be such a long wait between books.  I’m hooked and I have to know what happens to Evalle and how some of these new subplots unfold.  So, who has that time machine ready? ;)
