Bite Club by Rachel Caine

RCaine-Bite ClubI absolutely love the Morganville series by Rachel Caine. I love the characters, love the plot twists and usually can never put down whichever book from the series that I’m reading – until I read Bite Club, the tenth book in the series. I have some major love/HATE feelings towards it.

After discovering that vampires populate her town, college student Claire Danvers knows that the undead just want to live their lives. But someone else wants them to get ready to rumble.

There’s a new extreme sport getting picked up on the Internet: bare- knuckle fights pitting captured vampires against each other-or humans. Tracking the remote signal leads Claire to discover that what started as an online brawl will soon threaten everyone in Morganville…

The plot wasn’t as action packed as some of the previous books have been, though it couldn’t be considered slow. Bite Club was mostly pushed along by the emotional intensity of it. There were several scenes from Shane’s point of view that I both loved and hated. Loved because I LOVE Shane; but I hated them because I did not like what he was thinking. At all. I don’t want to give away too much but Shane goes through some personal issues (that’s putting it lightly) and well, it was the main source of my frustration with Bite Club.

Claire also had some emotional issues to deal with, most of them caused by Shane. Though, unlike in the previous novels, Claire seemed to have finally reached her limit in Bite Club. Instead of being able to come up with a solution and moving on from the problem, Claire actually had a meltdown. Is it wrong that I enjoyed her breakdown? I’m not sadistic, but I’ve been expecting her to have one since book 3 or 4, and the fact that she finally reached her limit made her seem more human.

If there was anything that Bite Club was good at, it was making me scream. Everyone else who has read it, can we all just say “ULKDHKAJHGLKADHSGGLISHDGLI!!!!!!!” and be done with the series? No? Yeah, me neither. I should be getting Last Breath sometime soon and I’ll probably devour it just as fast as I read every other Morganville book. Hopefully it won’t kill me.

  1. AGH! I’m only on book 6 so I stopped reading your review but did see that you weren’t in love with it. This is one of my favorite series, so now I’m worried. I think I’ll have to dive back into it again so I can see what the problem with this one is (and read your review when I’m done!).
