Guest Author: Hannah Jayne

Hannah JayneToday, I am excited to welcome author Hannah Jayne, who will be releasing her second Underworld Detection Agency novel, Under Attack, next week..

Sophie Lawson is a human immune to magic, which comes in handy for helping paranormal beings transition into everyday life. But fallen angel Alex Grace and his search for the Vessel of Souls is one curse she never saw coming. Suddenly an unexplainable string of killings and destruction has even San Francisco’s demons fearing for their immortal lives. And Sophie isn’t about to trust Alex’s all-too-vulnerable charm or his secret agenda. Now their hunt is revealing dangerous secrets about Sophie’s past, and malevolent power hellishly close to turning one irreverent human into the ultimate supernatural weapon.

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away a copy of Under Wraps or Under Attack – winners choice.

Fictional Doppelgangers

HJayne-Under AttackThe question I get asked most often at book signings is “are you anything like your character, Sophie Lawson?” I try to laugh loftily and establish that Sophie is a character and I am an actual person when a forgotten hunk of chocolate marshmallow pinwheel on my lapel catches my eye.

Okay, so maybe we like the same kind of cookies.

The next question is always about my craft – “how do you remain serious and disciplined when your stories are so quirky?”

I would love to tell everyone that I start my day with a series of sun salutations, a cup of herbal tea and a 400-word passage about the sunrise just to “loosen my fingers” a la Rudyard Kipling. But the truth is, I woke up this morning with 22 pounds of house cat pressing against my chest and a Bic pen wedged in my ponytail (I often write in bed). I didn’t loosen my fingers with words about the sunrise this morning because I was peeling back the lid on a can of Grouper Guts for my two ungrateful cats when it happened.

“So,” they ask, “is it hard to do a series and continually come up with funny things for your characters to do?”

Here I mimic my Oprah look – you know the one: eyes narrowed in deep contemplation, lips pursed but with the tiniest pout – and consider that the previous night I spent 45 minutes half-naked in a Lohman’s dressing room with an evening gown-as-tourniquet around my arm and neck. “No,” I say truthfully, “not at all.”

If only.

So, dear readers, here is my question for you: What characters (books, movies, TV) do you have certain uncanny similarities to? For a chance to win either a copy of Under Wraps or Under Attack, leave us a comment telling us who your fictional doppelganger is and why!

Contest Time!

Thank you Hannah for taking the time to stop by Literary Escapism!

Contest Time! Hannah is giving away a copy of Under Wraps or Under Attack – winners choice. To enter, all you have to do is answer this one question: What characters (books, movies, TV) do you have certain uncanny similarities to? Remember, you must answer the question in order to be entered. US/Canada only.

Even though I’m not giving the additional entries any more, you can still help support the author by sharing their article, and this contest, on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, or anywhere you can. After all, the more people who are aware of this fabulous author ensures we get more fabulous stories.

The winner must post a review of the novel someplace. Whether it is on their own blog, Amazon, GoodReads, LibraryThing or wherever, it doesn’t matter. Just help get the word out.

The contest will stay open until November 1st at which time I’ll determine the winner with help from the snazzy new plug-in I have.

I have not been contacting winners, so you will need to check back to see if you’ve won.

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I don’t think I’m similar to any characters. Only trait I see is in Andrea in Ilona Andrews Kate Daniel’s series. She knows the rules and weapons type. If there’s something I want to know, I’ll read about it as much as I can.

  2. Ummmm. I don’t really see myself as “similar” to any particular superhero character althought I’d like to be like Kevin Hearne’s Atticus. He’s snarky and sarcastic and knows lots of magic. While he’s literally old as dirt, he’s still got a great sense of humor and finds pleasure in life.

Thanks for the great post and giveaway!

  3. Not a fictional character but when I was younger people used to tell me all the time that I looked like Barbra Streisand. I only wish I could sing like her LOL.

  4. When I was younger (like between 18-23) I had 3 people tell me I looked like Wonder Woman. And lately every time my 2 year old sees a 30 Rock promo she says ‘mama.’ Brown hair and glasses are all Liz Lemon and I have in common, but I think it’s funny. As far as personalities go, I wouldn’t say I’m necessarily similar to these ladies, but I really like the most and feel like I can relate to Sirantha Jax and Sabina Kane.

  5. When Charmed was on, a lot of people said I looked like one of the sisters, mostly Shannen Doherty, though I didn’t see it.

  6. I don’t look like her, but the character I’m most similar to is from Wonderfalls, a short-lived TV show about a young woman named Jaye Tyler who works at Niagra Falls and suddenly has inanimate objects talking to her.

I don’t have things talking to me (at least not yet), but she’s solitary (read: antisocial) and very sarcastic. And I often borrow her quote and say that I am overeducated and unemployable.

Thanks for the chance to win one of these books!

  7. The only character that I can think of that I am similar to, is Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. I also have brown bushy/curly hair, love to read, am smarter than some. I also prefer to read than do other things, as well as I have a small close group of friends, rather than a large group where I am close to no one.

  8. Not sure I remind me of any character for one I am older and a bigger woman with a snarky attitude. So i’ll have to think about this.

  9. i used to get told i looked and acted like faith from buffy.. she kicked arse!! but that was a few years (and pounds) ago… lol

  10. When I was in high school, I was told I reminded everyone of the Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) in Scrooged. Maybe it was my hair or my laugh. Anyway, I’d love to have some similarities to some of my favorite kickass urban fantasy heroines, but I’m afraid I don’t have an ounce of kickass in me.

Kristin – I loved Wonderfalls! So sad when it got cancelled (and after only a few episodes too.)
