Tempt Me Saturday from Book Chick City!

Book Chick CityThe fact that I buy a lot, review a lot and skulk around book blogs a lot means that I am constantly exposed to lots of books. So for me finding three random novels to showcase was pretty easy, and I can’t wait to introduce them to you. So here goes…

The first book is Mind Over Monsters by Jennifer Harlow. This is from one of my favourite genres: zombie fiction. I know, but I can’t help it. I love zombies and this book looks awesome! I also think the cover is very cool – I read somewhere that someone thought it looked like a children’s book, but I wouldn’t want my child reading this. I mean, the huge shiny knife is a bit of a giveaway! ;)

Very few people know the truth about Beatrice Alexander. She’s no ordinary schoolteacher with a fondness for classic movies. Beatrice can move objects with her mind, an embarrassing and dangerous skill that she’s never learned to master—or embrace. After nearly killing her brother by accident, she joins F.R.E.A.K.S. The Federal Response to Extra-Sensory and Kindred Supernaturals is a top-secret offshoot of the FBI that “neutralizes” ghouls, trolls, and other monsters threatening humanity. Beatrice has no desire to become Buffy the vampire slayer. But F.R.E.A.K.S. offers training to control her power. Also, she doesn’t feel like such a freak next to the other supernatural members, including a cute former detective who’s a werewolf and an unbearable vampire determined to seduce Beatrice. Despite a natural instinct to flee from hideous, bloodthirsty zombies, Beatrice must prove herself on her first mission to find a cunning necromancer.

My second book is The Twilight of Lake Woebegotten by Harrison Geillor, which looks equally as awesome, but this time it’s vampires. And if you read the summary you will notice something very familiar about it… ;) It sounds as though it could be hilarious!

A small town… a plucky heroin, a shiny vampire, and a hunkey Native American rival with a secret. But all is not as it seems in Lake Woebegotten. Let Harrison Geillor reveal what lies beneath the seemingly placid surface. You’ll Laugh. We promise.
When Bonnie Grayduck relocates from sunny Santa Cruz California to the small town of Lake Woebegotten, Minnesota, to live with her estranged father, chief of the local two-man police department, she thinks she’s leaving her troubles behind. But she soon becomes fascinated by another student – the brooding, beautiful Edwin Scullen, whose reclusive family hides a terrible secret. (Psst: they’re actually vampires. But they’re the kind who don’t eat people, so it’s okay.) Once Bonnie realizes what her new lover really is, she isn’t afraid. Instead, she sees potential. Because while Bonnie seems to her friends and family to be an ordinary, slightly clumsy, easily-distracted girl, she’s really manipulative, calculating, power hungry, and not above committing murder to get her way – or even just to amuse herself. This is a love story about monsters… but the vampire isn’t the monster.

My third book is another zombie novel and one I REALLY can’t wait to get my hands on: Sadie Walker is Stranded by Madeleine Roux. I read her first zombie novel, “Allison Hewitt is Trapped” and absolutely loved it! It got a strong 9/10 from me, so I this is a highly anticipated read.

Sadie Walker fights for survival as the dead close in…In the months since The Outbreak, Seattle has become a walled citadel – the Infected are kept at bay but the city is rife with kidnappings, religious cults and black-market dealings. And things are about to get much, much worse. A group of frustrated religious fanatics, the ‘Repopulationists’, destroy part of the wall and zombies swarm the city. Devastated by the brutal kidnapping of her nephew, illustrator Sadie Walker flees Seattle with her best friend Andrea and secures passage on a boat with no destination. The ragtag bunch aboard the ship are thrown ashore by a storm and stumble across what appears to be a thriving survivors camp. The shipwrecked group, relived to find food, shelter and friendship, relax into the rhythm of the community’s existence. But then people start to disappear…

So there you have it, three novels that have caught my attention and I can’t wait to read. Thanks so much, Jackie for inviting me over!

I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. I’ve got a copy of The Twilight of Lake Woebegotten that I still haven’t read yet, and I really need to change that soon. I’m a big fan of, well, mocking Twilight, and I’m hoping the satire lives up to my expectations for it. It really sounds like it will.

  2. @Bibliotrophic – I read the Twilight books when they first came out and I did enjoy them, but I must admit that “The Twilight of Lake Woebegotten” does sound awesome and like you I’m partial to a bit of ribbing ;) I hope you enjoy the book when you get to read it.

@Cat Russell – Thanks! I’m glad I could help you find some more zombie books to read. I just love this genre and I have SO many more that look and sound awesome, so if you ever want any more recs just tweet me or stop by the blog :)
