Young Justice

Young JusticeIf you follow LE on Facebook or Twitter, you probably already know that I’ve been watching a lot of DC Comic shows and movies, one of which is the Cartoon Networks’ Young Justice.

Don’t call them sidekicks! Superboy, Robin, Aqualad, Miss Martian, Kid Flash and Artemis are Young Justice, the Justice League’s secret weapon against the forces of evil. Following Batman’s orders, the Team takes on covert missions across the globe.

I’m sure I’m not part of the CN’s target audience, but as someone who is basically just discovering the entire DC Comic world, I have to say Young Justice is a pretty interesting show to watch.  If someone is looking to get caught up on the DC Universe, I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s still a great show of superheroes.

I guess I should say that I’m used to the world of the Justice League or the Justice League Unlimited, and while all those characters do show up at some point in Young Justice, I’m a little lost on the continuity.  For one, I know the JLA Flash to be Wally West, however in Young Justice, Wally is Kid Flash and I don’t know who the older Flash is (probably Barry, but in either case, one I’m not familiar with him).  Which kind of screws with my own timeline for the Justice League shows.  I mean, Flash (Wally) is so not a kid when he’s a founding member of the Justice League, but the JLA is obviously an established part of the YJ world.  So it’s kind of like the whole who came first – the chicken or the egg scenario.

Another thing the Young Justice has made me realized is Hal Jordan or John Stewart?  I know both as the Green Lantern, but I’ve always wondered what happened to Jordan when Stewart became a Green Lantern.  I guess I always thought that Stewart took over for  Jordan at some point, but after seeing the ending to the second episode, Independence Day: Part 2, I kind of get an answer to that question.

Young Justice S1V1However, neither of these really affects my enjoyment of Young Justice.  It’s still a fabulous show of superheroes that get to do some wickedly interesting adventures.  The biggest difference between what I know of the JLA and Young Justice is there’s more of a strategy to the adventures.  Where before you generally have a bunch of superheroes going all out against some big bads, the heroes of Young Justice tend to be more subtle in their ass-kickery.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s still there, but it’s not the only thing you’ll get from the show.  I would definitely check out the Young Justice and it’s also perfectly fine for any little children who have a major case of superhero worship going on right now.

Side Note: CN just released the first four episodes on a DVD – Young Justice: Season One V.1 – but I wouldn’t recommend getting it, but check it out from the library.  I would wait to pick up a copy after the first season has been completed.  We’re only on episode 16 of 24, so there’s still plenty of Young Justice to see and you’ll really want to be able to watch them from beginning to end.  However, don’t let me stop you if you want to get Season One V.1.  Season One V. 2 was just released if you want episodes five through nine.

  1. I love the comic cartoons and we all try to catch Young Justice when we have the chance, especially since it tends to be on before or after Clone Wars. The timeline for Young Justice can be confusing so we all just try to pretend that we’ve never seen any of the other cartoons or comics. My husband gets especially irritated by this. I’ve found that DC is far more confusing than Marvel too. Not sure why. As far as I’m concerned, anything with Batman is worth watching:) I’ve even tried a few of the New 52 comics on my ipad…cool stuff.
