Dark Predator by Christine Feehan

CFeehand-Dark PredatorI was really surprised when I saw all of the bad reviews for Dark Predator.  Christine Feehan is one of my favorite authors, and she normally gets rave reviews. After I finally got the time to read Dark Predator, I could see why readers were upset  with it, but I absolutely loved it.

As brutal as the undead he hunted, Zacarias De La Cruz was a master executioner. Now his stark and savage journey has ended. For his brothers, Zacarias had walked to the edge of madness, but with centuries as a killing machine now left to the past and without a hunt to define him, Zacarias wonders, for the first time in his life, who he really is.

The answer awaits him back home, in Peru, in the betrayal of a woman who is readying her trap, in the vengeance of an old enemy, in the inevitable consequences of a bloody family legacy-and in the deliverance of a lifemate he never could have imagined…

Dark Predator was a lot different from the other books in the Dark series. For one thing, it took place entirely at one of Zacarias ranches in Peru, focusing more on the relationship between him and Marguarita than the war with the vampires. Instead of making the plot slow and dull, the intense relationship between the two of them had me devouring the pages.

Marguarita was way more submissive than other heroines. She was strong and independent, and she did try to run away from  Zacarias in the beginning. Yet later, once she and Zacarias were a couple, she would actually listen and obey when he commanded her to stay put. Although she never listened to him when he forbid her from being around other males – especially her childhood friend, Julio.

Zacarias was so stuck in his beliefs of how a woman should behave that I actually found him kind of funny. He was honestly perplexed as to why Marguarita wouldn’t stay in bed all day while he was sleeping, despite his orders for her to do just that. I know that that wasn’t supposed to be funny, but I would laugh anyway. Other than that, Zacarias was brutal. He’d been alive for so long, fighting the evil vampires, that any battle he went into now lasted only as long as he wanted it to last. That’s probably why there weren’t that many fight scenes in Dark Predator: If Zacarias could simply kill a vampire whenever he felt like it, why bother to drag out the fighting?

Marguarita and Zacarias were utterly perfect for each other. Marguarita’s slight exertions of independence kept Zacarias from being a complete domineering bully and Zacarias made Marguarita feel soft and feminine in a way no other man had. Of course, the sex was really, really hot, but that was simply icing on the cake.

Another of the major complaints was the lack of dialogue, and to that, all I have to say is “DUH!” Marguarita was mute because she’d had her throat torn out by a vampire in a previous novel, and therefore couldn’t actually speak. Although she did speak telepathically with Zacarias and wrote notes to everyone else when she had something to say.

To me, Dark Predator was just another amazing book in an amazing series by an amazing author. I, for one, can’t wait to see what happens next in the Carpathian world.
