Sweet Demon by Misty Evans

Antho-EntangledThe Halloween themed anthology Entangled contains novellas by authors I know and love, and by authors I have yet to try. Misty Evans was one of those new -to-me authors, though after reading Sweet Demon, Evans’ contribution to the anthology, I don’t know if I can say I love her but I am intrigued enough to read some of her other books.

When Chicago’s vampire king insists Kali Sweet join his empire, the vengeance demon must rely on her ex – the half-human, half-chaos demon who left her at the altar three hundred years ago – in order to escape the vamp’s clutches.

Kali was my favorite kind of heroine. She appeared to the world as a tough-as-nails, kick-ass woman yet she had a softer, more emotional side that came out more when Rad, her rock star ex, was around or in her thoughts. Yet, (and I supposed this was for the sake of the plot) it was very easy for the vampire king’s minions to abduct her. I’d hoped she would have been able to put up more of a fight, either when she was abducted or during the final battle with the vampire king himself.

While Rad did play a big part in the final fight scene between Kali and the vampire king, we didn’t get to know much about Rad or his relationship with Kali. All we know is that he left her at the alter 300 years ago and hasn’t spoken to her since but now he’s ready to talk/work his way back into her life. He was hot, and I do love me some rock stars, I’m just not sure how I feel about him. I mean, leaving a woman at the alter then suddenly showing up 300 years later and wanting everything to just go back to the way it was aren’t very endearing traits.

Sweet Demon was really short. I mean, really, really short. As in, just when I thought it was going to get really good, it ended. Only after I finished reading it did I find out that it is a prequel to Revenge is Sweet, the first novel in Evans’ Kali Sweet series. That’s a good thing because the ending of Sweet Demon was so open-ended that it didn’t feel like an ending at all. I’m curious to see what happens to Kali and how Rad fits in.

If that doesn’t entice you to try out Entangled, then I should add that all proceeds are being donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. A totally worthy cause and all the more reason for you to go out a buy this anthology!
