Seduction of a Highland Lass by Maya Banks

MBanks-Seduction of a Highland LassWhile I can’t say that Seduction of a Highland Lass by Maya Banks was one of my favorite books of 2011, I can say that it was much better than its predecessor, In Bed With a Highlander.

Fiercely loyal to his elder brother, Alaric McCabe leads his clan in the fight for their birthright. Now he is prepared to wed for duty, as well. But on his way to claim the hand of Rionna McDonald, daughter of a neighboring chieftain, he is ambushed and left for dead. Miraculously, his life is saved by the soft touch of a Highland angel, a courageous beauty who will put to the test his fealty to his clan, his honor, and his deepest desires. An outcast from her own clan, Keeley McDonald was betrayed by those she loved and trusted. When the wounded warrior falls from his horse, she is drawn to his strong, lean body. The wicked glint in his green eyes ignites a passion that will follow them back to Alaric’s keep, where their forbidden love draws them deeper into the pleasures of the flesh. But as conspiracy and danger circle closer, Alaric must make an impossible choice: Will he betray his blood ties for the woman he loves?

Seduction of a Highland Lass was a love story, through and through. The plot focused around the relationship between Alaric and Keeley, rarely even mentioning Duncan Cameron – the evil laird who wants to defeat the McCabe clan and claim Mairin. (He was the threat in In Bed With a Highlander, and was supposed to be a continuing threat in Seduction of a Highland Lass, but obviously that aspect of the plot didn’t work out.) Because of all that, there was a lot of room for angst which got boring and redundant after the first 100 pages or so.

I loved Keeley in the beginning when she was strong and independent, after living by herself for so many years. That love started to wane a bit halfway through Seduction of a Highland Lass when it felt like in almost every scene after she came to live with the McCabe clan, she was crying or on the verge of tears over something. (That something usually being Alaric.) That’s not to say there wasn’t a reason for her tears; Seduction of a Highland Lass was a highly emotional novel, and I may have leaked a tear or five during one scene, but Keeley cried way, way too often. I just wanted to tell her to buck up and make her own fate, like she had been doing for most of her life.

For his part, Alaric didn’t really cut it for me. Yeah, he was hot and he tried to be honorable but he was just as emotional as Keeley. He would go on and on about how much he loved Keeley then turn around and go on and on about how he had to marry Rionna because it was the right thing to do. His indecisiveness was not sexy. Alaric was also prone to injuries, him and Keeley both. It felt like throughout the entirety of Seduction of a Highland Lass, one of them would get hurt and the other had to nurse them back to health. Constantly.

If they did nothing else right, Alaric and Keeley had some really hot sex. I mean, it was melt off the pages hot. And in all honesty, that made up for all the annoying agnsty scenes.

While I didn’t absolutely love Seduction of a Highland Lass, it was a cute story with lots of really hot sex. And sometimes that’s exactly the kind of book I want/need to read.
