Black Friday: Theresa Meyers

Black FridayBlack Friday is here and we’re discussing the season with Theresa Meyers’s Cate and Rook from Shadowlander.

Four sisters, three rules to live by, one big problem.

O’Connell Family Rule #1: Don’t let the Fae know you see them.
O’Connell Family Rule #2: Don’t talk to the Fae.
O’Connell Family Rule #3: Never, ever follow them.

Most people only believe what they can see. Gifted with the ability to see the deep, dark fae of Shadowland, Catherine Rowan Mary O’Connell would prefer not to. When the fae abduct her friend Maya, Cate breaks the sacred O’Connell Family Rules and sets a trap for the handsome fae who haunts her every step.

Rook, High Court Advisor to the Shadow King, has been following Cate since she was sixteen. When Cate reveals herself as one of the fabled “Seers”, Rook is stunned—she is one of the few that can permanently open the gates between their worlds. If he turns her over to the Shadow King, his court will rule the human realm.

Cate knows she has precious little time to find Maya. By midnight, the glamour of Mid-Summer’s Eve will fade, leaving her trapped forever in the Shadowland, but Maya’s abductor won’t give up the woman he’s mesmerized easily.

The midnight hour is almost at hand. Cate must choose: her freedom or her destiny.

Make sure you stick around to the end. We’ll be giving away an ebook of Shadowlander.

The huff of moist breath from the crowd clouded in the air outside the doors of the store. The air smelled of wet wool and the strong aroma of hot coffee. Cate blew hard on her gloved hands and held them over her nose trying to keep warm despite the chill of the early morning air. 5:00 A.M. and already the fae were out in force beneath the bright artificial lights, mingling with the crowd of shoppers. Cate eyed the steaming coffee cup in the woman’s hand beside her with longing.

“Tell me again why we’re here?” Rook rumbled next to her ear. The words threaded through her making her warmer than any coat. Right now she could have been sitting on the beach with him in Shadowland, digging her toes into the sugar-soft sand, the sun warming her shoulders. But that could come later. After the shopping. After the round of hot chocolate spiked with cinnamon and snickerdoodles shared with her sisters.

“Tradition.”

“It’s tradition to get mauled for cheaply manufactured product you intend to give away?” She glared at him. The lady beside her glared back and Cate’s cheeks reddened and Cate looked away. For a moment she’d forgotten that Rook hadn’t glamoured himself. Only she could still see him. The woman probably thought Cate was giving her a competitive face off before the doors opened.

Yes, Shadowland would have been far better this time of year. Try as she might to avoid Black Friday or Saturday, her younger sister Clare was down with a cold. She was always the one to go out into the shops. Cate tried to avoid it like the plague. It wasn’t the crowds that bothered her so much as the fae.

Many of them had glamoured themselves looking the same as the rest of the human shoppers, dressed up in hats and scarves and heavy coats. But there were others, dark scaly ones with razor-sharp claws and toothy grins, wide-mouth, toad-like fae, licking their thick lips in anticipation. They were mixed in with the crowds, pulling hair here, tripping a person there. Slicing open the bottom of a shopping bag at an opportune moment. Snitching things out of shoppers bags or switching them in a game Cate referred to as “shopping for others”. For the fae the mayhem of shopping was sheer fun. Of course they liked all the shiny things too.

“You don’t have sales like this, do you?” Cate whispered to Rook. The wind off the Puget Sound whipped the strands of dark hair against his strong, tanned throat.

He chuckled, his warm breath tickling her ear as he tucked in closer beside her, wrapping his warmth around her. “Why should we? We don’t have to shop. That’s what the Vaquin are for.”

Cate huffed. “How do you expect servants to have a clue what to get your grandmother or best friend?”

Rook grew still for a moment, then frowned. “You may have a point. But then again, it’s not like our family is as close as yours. I sincerely doubt my father would even stop to think if I’d purchased him something myself. Besides, what could you possibly buy a king?”

“An Xbox 360 with Kinect?”

Rook’s brown eyes softened with humor as he glanced down at her. “Somehow I doubt he’d ever use it.”

Cate shrugged. “Yeah. Why bother. You don’t need to be the controller, when you can control the fate of an entire world with a wiggle of your little finger.”

A wave of energy zipped through the crowd, eliciting murmurs and cheers as the store employees came to the doors to unlock them.

“Get ready. We’re going in.” Cate tensed, digging her fingers deeper into the thick cable knit of the sweater around Rook’s bicep. It flexed beneath her fingers.

“Do you need me to make a path for you?” His tone was serious, intent.

Cate grinned at him. He was always like that–determined to make the way easier for her. “Just try and keep up.” From her pocket she pulled a miniature horse shoe, the black iron flecked with rust spots.

Rook stiffened. “Do you really think that kind of weapon is necessary?” Iron was deadly to fae and they both knew it.

“Tradition.”

He narrowed his eyes. “Just keep that thing away from me.”

“I wouldn’t dream of touching you with it,” Cate teased. “It’s only for emergencies like I’m attacked or a fae gets the last sweater on sale I planned to get for Clare.”

“I think I can protect you, easily enough.”

Cate sighed and slipped the horseshoe back in her pocket as the crowd pressed forward squeezing them like toothpaste through the entrance. “I know, but I need something else from you even more.”

Heat flared in espresso dark depths of Rook’s eyes and a killer smile curved his kissable mouth, making Cate’s lips tingle. “And what would that be?”

Cate grinned. “I need you to carry out the shopping bags when I’m done.”

The progeny of a slightly mad (NASA) scientist and a tea-drinking bibliophile who turned the family dining room into a library, Theresa Meyers learned early the value of a questioning mind, books and a good china teapot. A former journalist and public relations officer, she found far more enjoyment using her writing skills to pen paranormal novels in the turret office of her Victorian home. She’s spent nearly a quarter of a century with the boy who took her to the Prom, drinks tea with milk and sugar, is an adamant fan of the television show Supernatural, and has an indecent love of hats. I am a 30-something SAHM with two adorable boys and a supportive husband who is very tolerant of my reading addiction. I love to read and easily go through about a dozen books a month – well I did before I had kids. Now, not so much. After my first son was born, I began to take my hobby of reviewing a little more serious and started Literary Escapism to help with my sanity. I love to discuss the fabulous novels I’ve read and meeting all the wonderful people in the book blogging community has been amazing.

  1. LOVE this excerpt!! I’ve been wanting to read this for forever–it’s waiting for me on my Kindle–but life keeps getting in the way. This totally just bumped it up :-)

  2. I don’t know….let’s see. I would buy him the newest remote control car. That way he could have fun running it around the court tripping his subjects…LOL

  3. Every Fae King deserves a digital camera to help capture the moment! :-)
I love the sound of this book – the three rules sound like they’re made to be broken though! :)

  4. I would get him a book or some sort of weapon not made from iron or silver. Unfortunately I don’t think our technological world has many new things that would benefit a fae.

  5. Great excerpt. I’d love to read this. Let’s see, technology doesn’t work in Fae lands, and they are allergic to iron. I wouldn’t be able to afford anything big, so I’d have to go for a gag gift – a really cool tie, or some boxers with a fun Xmas pattern on them.

  6. I think I’d buy the Fae king a nice jeweled sword, it would be nice looking and come in handy when he needs it as well.

  7. Hmmm.. what would a fae king want? i would get him a playstation 3 and a bunch of awesome games.. or a shiny pocket watch or one of those little back massager things.. they always come in handy

  8. Please don’t enter me in the contest – I already have a copy! :)

Just wanted to say thanks for an awesome post!

    Happy Holidays!

  9. I would buy a Fae King a fun Christmas tie- it would be fun to see his face, and hopefully he would have a sense of humor!

  10. There is a game that when you pull out a card you have to enact whatever it says. I think I would get him that game. His life is so serious all the time maybe something like that could help him unwind and have fun.

  11. What do you get for the fae king who has everything? Hmmm. He would probably like a little entertainment. How about the boxed set of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Thanks for the giveaway!
